Chemistry: The Second Coming

Reported by bunny / Submitted 10-10-02 16:36

There’s no disputing the fact that the last Chemistry was a glorious, out-and-out, smiley-faces-all-round success – pretty much the perfect introduction for a new night from Frantic. But the all-important million pound question remains... can they hand out a second dose of high-quality clubbing? Well, the options are already down to 50/50 and you can forget phoning a friend, they’re all far too munted... so we’ll just have to ask the audience...

Step out of Mornington Crescent on the night in question and this is what greets you; people. LOTS of people. It’s only around 10.30 but already Camden Palace is mobbed by a mess of cyberkids, try-hards, friendly weirdos and, apparently, lots of blokes called Ben Sherman. From here it looks like absolute chaos, but once we’ve tackled the Krypton Factor assault-course-style roadworks, closer inspection shows that everyone’s behaving themselves – in fact considering the size of the queues I’ve never seen them move so quickly. Shame the same can’t be said for the cloakroom queues, which are as ramshackle as ever. I suggest they put the Chuckle Brothers in charge in future, they wouldn’t do a better job but at least they’d keep you entertained while you’re waiting... and waiting...

That’s the only major fault I can find with Camden Palace. In all other aspects it’s a fantastic venue but it’s let down badly by its cloakroom’s organisation. There’s nothing more frustrating than when you’re standing squashed in the Line To Nowhere while one of your favourite tunes teases you faintly from the main room. Even with both cloakrooms open, as at Chemistry 2, things are still very messy. So unfortunately this is where we heard the remainder of James Lawson’s set and, good as it was, it would have sounded a LOT better on the dance floor Frown

Despite all this there’s an atmosphere like that of a Boy Scout group who’ve just learnt that this year’s xmas entertainment will not be Uncle Norman on the spoons but Britney Spears doing a live PA. Just like outside there are people EVERYWHERE. But strangely enough, it doesn’t feel uncomfortably crowded, just loaded with energy and happier than a pig in rose fertiliser. Just as we make it down onto the dance floor Steve Hill comes on and, in suitable Hard Dance style, everyone makes some nooooooiiiiiiissssssee!!!!!!!!!!

Opening with a bangin mix of Cortina’s Music Is Moving, Steve serves up another red-hot slice of Hard Trance with all the trimmings Smile. Veering away from the standard set-menu-set-list to offer us some of the more unusual tracks, modern anthems such as the untouchable Hands Up by Arome are mixed in with a deep’n’dirty version of Shakedown’s At Night and a sublime sample of N-Trance’s Set You Free, which gets all hands stretching for the ceiling like it’s raining liquid gold. This is another brilliant set from a consistently good DJ and top marks to Frantic for giving everyone a chance to catch him by not putting him on first!

The transition between Hill’s set and Phil Reynold’s and Spencer Freeland’s was a bit lost on me because by this point I was solid gone and surrounded by a sea of nutters in a similar state. As a very wise man said to me earlier in the night, the best nights are always the ones where you don’t even remember to look at your watch until about 4am, and this was definitely the case at Chemistry 2. So all I can tell you is that at around the end of Hill’s set and the start of Reynolds/Freeland’s came Revolution, DJ Virus’ All Your Base and the most beautiful mix of the Olive tune You’re Not Alone, the first time I’ve ever heard it and I hope it won’t be the last.

We’re deep into the Reynolds/Freeland set now and the music is so uplifting it leaves you feeling like you’ve got ping-pong balls on the soles of your shoes Smile. Tracks like Get A Life (Frantic Theme) and Bad Ass mean it’s strictly stomping-room only from the highest balcony, down through the dance floor and right across the stage to the DJ booth. There’s no doubting the DJ’s styles work well together, Reynolds providing the exhilaration and euphoria while Freeland drives us on with the darker tracks. By the time the Tidy Boys come on there’s a weather system forming up by the ceiling and the crowd has lost roughly half its weight through sweat and pure joy.

We hang around long enough to gage that this is going to be a hard and heavy set, not a bad choice but we’re still craving the upbeat pulse and pace of Hard Trance. So it’s a quick sprint up to the Black and White bar to catch Tara Reynolds in full-flow. It’s so hot up here the air-conditioning unit looks like it’s spilling out dry ice, not that this is going to slow anyone down for a second. The bar is thronged but there’s still plenty of room to bounce like a ballistic bunny round the DJ booth, should you so desire, hehehe... Actually, it’s almost impossible to keep still. Tara’s reputation as one of the liveliest DJ’s around is reinforced once more through a series of blistering tracks that keep the mercury rising. We sweat it out for half an hour then admit defeat in the relative cool of the chill-out room downstairs.

Back in the main room the Tidy Boys are really building up momentum now from what, after the frenzy of the Reynolds/Freeland collaboration, seemed like a slow start. Tunes such as Barbed Wire and the superlative BK mix of Tony De Vit’s I Don’t Care get limbs flying in all directions as the dance floor becomes a marvellous free-for-all once more Smile

Then it’s time for the First Lady of Hard Dance.

So does Lisa Lashes give the crowd what it wants? Well, put it this way... with her tune selection she delivers so many times she makes Fed-Ex look like Postman Pat – without his black and white cat. James Lawson’s Energise, Music Is The Drug, It’s About Music and a final spin of the Frantic Theme gets each and every raver on their feet and off their trolleys. Bodies are twisting and jolting as the lasers swirl etch-a-sketch patterns over everything in sight. When my favourite track of the moment POS 51 drops everything becomes a little blurry but it’s ok, it’s just the bliss-factor kicking in Smile. Things calm down a little towards the end of the set but by then I don’t think anyone cares. What remains, what matters, and what we’ll all remember, is that tonight Frantic – along with every DJ and every clubber present – took the concept of the ultimate clubbing experience to its limit... and then kept going.

So, did Frantic manage to equal the quality of the first Chemistry event? Judging by the crowd reaction, I’d say it’s a strong possibility... Smile

The next Frantic event is Timeless on Saturday 12th October at the Camden Palace. For full details click [int=section=whatson&action=showevent&music=&eventid=daf5c5d4305d93d5449c259b4a373493]here[/int.
