Canadian Superstar DJ Preach

Many of you reading this will think Britain is the greatest dance music nation on the planet; but is it really? Pick up a copy of the DJ Mag Top 100 list and you’ll soon realize that while there are still plenty of UK jocks featured, it doesn’t hold the dominance it once did. Escape the craggy shores of Blighty to the windmill strewn flatlands of Holland and you’ll unearth more Top 100 worthy djs than you can shake a tulip at!Venture even further afield to Eastern Europe and you’ll be greeted with a raw excitement, not seen since David Hasselhoff took off his shirt off at the end of the Berlin Wall concert.
For example, in countries such as Poland and Czech huge sardine packed stadium events play host to visually spectacular stage shows. Familiar big names such as Paul Van Dyk, Sasha or Carl Cox play alongside other god-like stars us UK mortals may not have heard of. Indeed there are places in the word the crowds still go loop-da-loop and djs are still treated with the revered omnipotence once enjoyed here.
The Canadian born DJ Preach is one such star. Touted as Marco V and Carl Cox’s favourite producer, Preach is one name you’re very likely to see playing the main stage of festivals such as Awakenings and Dance Valley to crowds of 40,000 more.
But unless you are raging tech fiend, or a regular clubber outside the UK you’d be forgiven for never having heard of him. That’s because, although he’s played nearly every other country in the world, has a raft and fans a long as your arm and has produced heaps of big seller tunage he’s never appeared in the UK. Well not until those wonderful people Proactive pulled a few strings and persuaded the tech trance doyenne to break his UK cherry for Party Proactive at Turnmills on 02nd Sept.
Intrigued? Well you should be; this guy is currently one of the hottest producers of the last few years and Party Proactive’s biggest headliner to date by a mile. If you’re heading down there you’re in for one hell of a treat; but in the mean time, let's educate you a little bit more about Canadian superstar, DJ Preach.
You hail from Canada. Which bit of Canada do you come from? Do you still live there?
I was born on 1979 in small village called Breakeyville near Quebec City. I lived there for 19 years, then in downtown Montreal for five years and I live now in Breclav, a small city on the Austria and Slovakian borders of the Czech Republic.
What is your real name; and why did you decide on the moniker, Preach?
My real name is Philippe Babin. I chose Preach because of what I do; I preach the music I believe in. For me it’s a religion. Every second of my life I’m surrounded by music and my thoughts are constantly looping music. Music is the language I used to communicate my messages.
Reading your discography, it seems pretty impressive. You’ve worked with Marco V, Pedro Delgardo, Oliver Lieb and released over 50 tunes worldwide. When did you start producing and who are your inspirations?
I started very early. Even before I was djing I was producing music at my parent’s house. I think I started a little before the internet became international. I used to connect with my 1200bauds modem on the underground boards of Canada. I was downloading the very basic computer sequencer, creating my own samples and produce my first tracks. Later on I bought some gear and produced a little more serious stuff.
It took a while before I released my first tracks, mostly because my work wasn’t good enough to be sold. I released my first record on Ascend Recordings (Montreal’s first big techno label) back in 2000. Since then it has been pretty hectic!
I must admit my inspiration come from lots of sources. In my younger age I was inspired a lot by the local punk bands and the acid house/breaks scene of our city. Of course, over the years lots of techno and trance producers have been inspiring me a lot. I can’t think of specific names but Marco V, Oliver Lieb, Valentino Kanzyani and Smith & Selway are some of the artists I’ve been following a great deal since.
As well as your own country you have a massive following in Holland and Eastern Europe. Why do you think your style of music is particularly popular in these countries?
Holland and Spain are definitely my most common destinations. I think it’s not so much a matter of style, but more of who will give you the chance to perform. Everywhere I play the crowd is different and like it differently. I tend to adapt myself as much as possible and play more or less energetic depending on the vibe. I wanna keep my style of course but we know that in Spain its gonna rock hard and in Holland it will be more melodic! I’m expecting a great party in Turnmills, whether it will be harder techno or a more clubby night!
East Europe seems to be loving trance, tech trance and progressive house at the moment. Why do you think this is; and are they any places you’ve played which are particularly memorable?
I think trance and progressive are very big all over the world. I would never prostitute myself and follow trends which does not represent my sound, but I admit I always had a great feeling during my trancier gigs. I don’t mean I would play epic but tech-trance and more progressive techno are obviously my preferred sets. Recently I played main stage at Dance Valley ahead of Armin and it was memorable! I feel that people who go to trance parties are little more open minded. They love it techno too! Also the last weekend was pretty amazing. I played in Slovenia at Valentino Kanzyani’s party and we had a fantastic night! From trancey techno to minimal techno, it was diversified and that’s the way it should be all the time!
Recent notable tracks which you’ve created include: Broken Inside’, ‘Oxygen’ and the remix of Marco V’s ‘More Than a Life Away’. Tracks like these have led you to being hailed as Marco Vs favourite producer. Do you have any more plans to work with him; or indeed any of the other superstar tech/trance djs?
Marco is a great person and a great dj/producer. I would love to participate in one of his projects in the future! I don’t care that much if the dj is superstar; I often get offers but I try to be careful and not to put myself in something I don’t like. At the moment I’m working on my first artist album and I want to focus my mind on producing a sound that will really define my vision of future techno.
What is the scene like In Canada? What are the main clubs and key sounds at the moment?
The scene in Canada (like lots of countries of the world) has always been more oriented on the names than the sound!! Of course house, hip hop and trance are big but people will go if they know who’s playing! I had some amazing techno gigs recently in Canada. I’m still resident at Aria Nightclub, but many other big clubs are rocking the country: Gouvernment in Toronto, Dagobert in Quebec City, Heaven Club in Ottawa . . .
You have an artist album planned for 2007. What can we expect?
Yeah as I said earlier I’m working on it at the moment. I’m still noting on papers my ideas and recording melodies with my voice, but as soon as I come back from tour in September. I will sit down and start producing. I wanna do lots of dance floor tracks but also slower stuff with vocals. The plan is to make 12 tracks with 12 remixes from various artist! You can expect something like ‘Broken Inside’ and ‘Oxygen’ for sure!
How was Dance Valley for you?
The main stage gig on Saturday was simply amazing! I was very nervous at the beginning because it was my biggest gig in 2006 but I must say as soon as I got on the decks all the pressure went down. They lost my luggage in Madrid so I had to run to Amsterdam Central and get myself new clothes. We were also shooting a documentary film so let me tell you it was a really busy weekend!
I also hear you are currently making a documentary about the life of a dj. What is the life of the dj and what will people learn from your film?
The documentary we are doing is in fact a demo to present to a Canadian Film institution that will give us the funding necessary to make the final version. One of my friends from Canada has suggested the idea and I was already planning to come up with a DVD so we decide to work together on this project. Some of the features on this DVD: you can get to see what a weekend would feel like for me as a dj, traveling from one country to another and all the obstacles that come with this job. As well as interviews from other djs and previews of my live gigs! We hope to get the approval to make this big budget documentary, then we will have a year or two to finalize it!
As well as djing and promoting you also run your own label Relic Recordings. How is this going; and which artists are you working on at the moment?
We recently released two EPs on Relic Rec and Relic Silver. Oxygen EP was from me and it featured Marco V and Eric Sneo Remixes. Funkolicous EP was from Marco G and it featured Donald Glaude, Mario Ochoa and Grooveman Remixes. The next release on Relic Rec will be with Valentino Kanzyani, Darren Kay and myself. For Relic Silver, it will be Jaimie Fanatic from Holland with Laidback Luke and Marco G remixes. We are digital as well so people can buy our stuff on Beatport, Itunes, Juno and Trackitdown, just to name a few.

What is your favourite food?
Indonesian cuisine mostly. Green curry chicken with veggies and lots of chilli!
What do you prefer, dogs or cats?
Cats because they can take care of themselves when you’re away; but hopefully one day I’ll have two big dogs!
What is your current favourite gadget?
My Sony PSP. I can’t travel without it! I keep all my pictures and favourite albums on it. I can watch movies and go on the internet. It’s a really practical tool for a globe trotter.
What was the last book you read?
The Da Vinci Code. I know it’s not very original but I don’t have much time to read.
Where is the best place in the world?
My home in Czech. I sleep so well in my bed!
