A Close Encounter with the Enigmatic C.K.

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 05-06-18 07:50

C.K. aka Edgar Montez stormed into the psychedelic trance scene just over a year ago and it’s fair to say he’s made quite an impact! As well as scooping a residency for Tribalism Radio and being a regular performer on Psychedelic Saturdays, C.K. has already graced the decks at legendary parties like Illuminaughty, Ozora – One Day in London, Tribal Village, Cohesion & Psymera! C.K.’s now taking on the festivals and can be seen performing this year at awesome festivals including: Psy-Boutique in Turkey, Dharma Festival in Poland and Boomtown in the UK! But he’s not stopping there. Having dipped his toe into the world of production releasing his debut track ‘Game Over’ on the newly launched Psymera Records, C.K. is now meticulously crafting his sound and developing his production skills. I decided the time was now to grab him for a quick Q&A session!

Edgar - you were born and raised in Portugal. What was it like growing up there and what's your earliest childhood memory?

Growing up in Portugal was amazing to be honest, as a kid I had loads of fun. In the summer we would spend all the time on the beach, camping, walks in the forest and much more - a lot of outdoor fun!

What music were you into growing up?

I started with heavy metal funnily enough, then had enough of this and start listening to rock and roll.

Later I got into electronic music and classical too. When I got my first car I fitted it with the best sound system that I could afford - and was all about the quality! I would love to listen to Eros Ramazoty, Pavarotti - that era of music was fun times. Later I started getting into house music and this led to loving Psy-trance

When did you move to London and what drew you here?

I come to the United Kingdom back in 2002, initially just for six months, but I loved it so much I am still here! Lols! The night life was amazing and I was partying all the time.

When did you first hear psy-trance and how did it make you feel?

I was really into Trance back in 2002. One day a friend took me to a psy-trance party at the Medusa club and I loved it - I was hooked! It was from that day I started listening to it literally all the time!

Tell us about your first DJ set – how did this come about?

My first ever set was at a psy-trance event called Fresh! It was amazing - the feeling of having people dancing and enjoying my mixing and the music I was selecting. I started DJing initially because one of my best friends, Josh Smith aka Psywiser, got me into it. He is an amazing DJ and I absolutely loved his style! He saw my interest and encouraged me to start mixing; somehow he was sure I would be good at it. I guess he was right… Smile JB Hyde aka Subzero is also a good friend and like a brother to me. He taught me well and also pushed me and encouraged me to go for it, as did my other mate - Emanuel. I’m now really glad they did!

What are the best and the worst parts of being a DJ for you?

Hmmm- that’s a hard one to answer to be honest. I guess the worst part for me is playing the last track! Lol! The travelling sometimes is hard, I had gigs that I had to drive 6 hours to get there then play and finish, then head back. The best? Oh so many! You get to know so many people including artists from all over the world which is awesome. The feeling behind the decks is priceless too - I love every second of it.

You recently had your first release on Psymera Records - congrats on that! Describe your current sound and what are your ideas for future releases?

True, I decided to make a track just to be exclusive for me to play but then Psymera Records liked it so much they asked me if they could release it and I thought - why not? For the future - I have some cool ideas for tracks in mind, I am still learning though so it will take a while. I will also be releasing a compilation. I have a few things in my mind. All will be revealed…

What do you think makes a good artist? What qualities and skills do you need to have?

I think the main one is to love what you do and to remain humble. If not; the crowd will notice that and may not like it. Skills are also very important too, that and the ability to read the crowd and be prepared to change the set at any moment if necessary. It’s all about the track choice in the end and of course having loads of fun.

What's been the absolute highlight of your life so far?

I love Vini Vici, Skazi, Morten Granau and Phase and I never thought I would ever share a stage with them. Now I have had the pleasure to not only be on the same line up and share the stage with them but also meet them in person which has been incredible.

You're also signed to Enterrec Records and Alchemy Records. How did this come about?

It all happened so fast to be honest; after a few months of starting to play out, I was approached by them and asked if I wanted to be part of their team. I was thrilled as for me this was a great opportunity.

You're a resident for Tribalism Radio and also involved in Psychedelic Saturdays - tell us about these shows...

Psychedelic Saturdays was started by 2 friends and I was invited to be part of the team.
We do the show to encourage and give a platform to new upcoming fresh DJs and producers to give them some exposure. We invite others to participate. It’s an amazing project with people who love psy-trance. Tribalismoradio I got a chance to play for them and become a resident - they are awesome and it’s an honour to be part of it.

Besides music, what are your other loves in life?

I love motorbikes and cars and when I can scuba diving is absolutely amazing. I would be diving all the time if I could.

If you could be someone else for one day, who would it be and why?

To be honest I never thought about that. I love being me so I don't think I would like to be anyone else.

Lastly, what are your hopes and dreams for your musical career? What do you have planned for the future?

I love psy-trance and consider myself very lucky. I have residencies at Cohesion events and Illuminaughty and it is amazing to be part of these 2 events. I’ve also joined 2 record labels and I have a few more things coming up soon. If I succeed I would love to get into production a lot more and travel the world playing at festivals one day… who knows.

Edgar – thank for taking the time out for this interview – good luck with everything & I’m excited to watch your career flourish X
