Going back to the Roots of psy trance with Metaphase and Zeus

With psychedelic trance having undergone something of a revival lately, a lot of clubs and promotions are jumping on the bandwagon. Fortunately for those with more than a passing interest in good music, there are some dedicated djs, producers and promotions doing their best to keep things real. Two of these talented individuals are Roots promoters and PointZero Records managers Fabry Motta aka Metaphase and Peter Welgemoed aka Zeus. After a year of awesome Roots parties where they’ve been responsible for introducing the likes of Israel’s Solar System to the UK and the launch of PointZero’s ‘Radioactivity Part 2’ compilation, these two are well deserving of their HF debut.
Fabry came to the UK from his native Italy nine years ago, while Peter is from South Africa. Both from rock and metal backgrounds, they only discovered electronic music in London, and first met at Escape from Samsara at The Fridge. Tonight they’re back at the Fridge for the FFF (Fridge Fiver Friday) Christmas Party, after a long journey into the world of psychedelic trance which led to them both becoming Antiworld residents and playing at some of the best psy trance parties in London and around the world.
Fabry aka Metaphase
Peter you’re from South Africa and Fabry, you’re from Italy. How did you both end up in London? Have you been here long and are you planning on staying a while?
Fabry: I wanted to learn the English language so I decided to come to London but didn’t’ expect to stay for 9 years. I’m happy here now.
Peter: My biggest ambition was always to travel around the world, so I quit my job within one week when a friend offered me the option of leaving South Africa with him and London was my first stop. This has been my home since then.
Were you both into dance music in your home countries or did you only get into it here? How did you meet and when did you both start working together?
We both were in hard rock and metal before and only discovered dance music while in London. We met each other at Escape from Samsara parties in the Fridge in 1998. We’ve been close friends since then and only started working together in 2005.
You both play psychedelic trance. What inspired you to get into this particular kind of music?
Fabry: I think this kind of trance is the most advanced and in terms of sound, it’s the most difficult to make so it’s a good challenge. I love the fact that you can listen to it anywhere and it doesn’t bore you.
Peter: I started out playing techno and was always inspired by psychedelic trance, but never had the courage to start playing that kind of music. With a bit of a push from Enrico and Fabry, I decided to give it a go and just got so much into it and started to make a bigger name for myself. I now have a bit of a techno edge to my style, but I never lose the psychedelia in my sets.
Peter aka Zeus
What does the ‘psychedelic’ in psy trance mean to you?
Fabry: When I think of psychedelic a few names come to my mind like Jimi Hendrix and early Pink Floyd, so I don’t’ actually find a good connection with psy trance! But if they’re happy calling it that… It’s just a bit more trippy than other kinds of dance music
Peter: I agree with Fabry on that one! When I’m on stage, I like to play the deepest, grooviest, mind bending tracks I have.
You both manage and promote a night called Roots, which has recently celebrated its first birthday. How did Roots come about? What do you reckon is the key to making a good promotion work?
Peter: Roots started out in 2001 and was held at The Arches in London Bridge. It was an amazing night with a good turnout of people, but unfortunately lost quite a fair bit of money, as none of us were actual promoters on the time and didn’t know all the ins and outs. But while working for Enrico, we picked up quite a lot of experience and decided to bring Roots back to life. I think the key to what we’re doing with our promotion is the fact that we love what we’re doing and we put all our energy into it. But can be very, very stressful sometimes.
Fabry: Same as Peter!
You’ve had some awesome artists play at your parties, including most recently Solar System and Oforia. What’s been your favourite Roots party to date?
Fabry : I think the best Roots party was in July 2006 when our good friend Marcello Vor played and lots of Brazilians turned up.
Peter: I agree with Fabry, our first few parties at the Mass were great and our last party with Oforia and Solar system was amazing. But unfortunately none of us really experienced it, as we were both running around like crazy animals trying to get everything running smoothly.
Do you have any future Roots events in the pipelines? What artists are you hoping to book and who would be your dream lineup?
Yes we are planning quite a few future events and we’ll also be joining forces with other parties/organisations to make it even bigger and better for the dedicated psychedelic crowds. Our dream line up/event would be to have a week long festival with the most beautiful crowd ever and every single main act you can imagine.
You’re also both heavily involved in PointZero Records. What are your roles there? What vision do you have for the label?
We both manage PointZero and our aim is to deliver top quality psychedelic music with both well-established international artists as well as upcoming artists
How did you learn to produce and what tracks have you made so far?
Fabry: Practice is the answer, but we both attended a music technology and audio recording school which helped us a lot on the understanding of sound and how it is created. We also have good friends like Udi (psysex) and Vor who’ve taught us a few tricks.
Have your respective sounds changed or evolved over the years at all? What kind of stuff do you like to play around with in the studio at the moment? Do you have any new tracks on the horizon?
Our sound has definitely changed over the years since we were playing hard trance and techno, but we like to experiment with different styles of sound and music. Be sure to expect some new tracks in the future and we’re also currently working on a new act together, which will hopefully be quite successful.
Vinyl or CD? Do you ever aim to play live sets? What do you think about the influence of modern DJ technology on dance music, psy trance and techno?
Fabry: Yes I’m preparing a live set which will be ready in the Spring. As for the influence of modern dj technology I think the dj, 2 decks and a mixer still beats everything. Too much technology… too unpersonal… hehe!
Peter: I’m currently working on a few projects and a live set will come in time. Regarding modern dj technology, I think is has developed quite a lot over the years. A lot of people, just like me, still believe that vinyl is still the ultimate method of dj’ing but over the years cd players have become almost vinyl, for example in the way you can scratch on cds etc. and can almost do exactly what you wanted on vinyl. I think that today both cds and vinyl are the way forward, there should be no limits to dj-ing but it still needs to come from the heart and originality is still very important.
As label managers and event promoters you regularly get to hear top demos from all around. What djs and promoters are you picking to do great things in 2007?
Yeah, we’ve had loads, such as Twisted Reaction, Dual Core, Kemi-cal from Butterfly Records and Solar System, which are going to be very promising. But there’s so many of them it’s difficult to keep up!

You’ve both played at some incredible parties around the world. What country have you both enjoyed playing in the most? Is there anywhere you’d really like to play?
Fabry: The best party abroad I played at was in China (Macau). The crowd were so up for it, it was unbelievable... I’d really like to play somewhere warm with the sunshine for the energy.
Peter: I’ve played at quite a few places and the best was in South Africa and Slovakia. The crowds are great and the alcohol’s quite cheap, that’s what we all want! If there’s a place I’d really fancy playing at, I think that should be on a secluded island with some top artists and all my closest friends together with lots of booze etc.
Zeus you’ve just put together the wicked ‘Radioactivity Part 2’ compilation, which the recent Roots party also launched. Was it difficult to put this compilation together? What concept did you have for it?
It was quite a challenge but really a lot of fun. We’ve got quite a lot of people involved and would also like to thank them all for all their help and support. The concept of this compilation was to involve both international artists as well as some great upcoming artists and to keep the compilation as groovy and funky as possible, which I think turned out quite a success.
Fabry, as a resident of Psygate you’ve played at some amazing Antiworld parties and are booked to play at the last Antiworld International Indoor Festival on February 3rd. What’s been your favourite Antiworld party over the years?
I’d have to say September 2000. It was really amazing, I’ve never seen so many people at SeOne (The Drome)! It was so full they had to open all the doors after reaching 45 degrees and people were dancing under the arches in the street.
Peter, you also dj techno as well as psy trance. Do you find it difficult going between two genres? Could you ever see yourself giving up the psy to focus on techno?
No I don’t think so cos I like playing both styles and I don’t think I would ever give one up for the other. I put a lot of energy into both styles! The styles are completely different though — even the mixing is a bit different as well. But some of the psy trance people like my style because of my techno background.
Fabry, you’ve been making some wicked tracks in the studio, including ‘Oksygen’ and ‘We Know’ with Panza. What, in your opinion, is the best track you’ve made so far?

Peter, you list sky-diving, flying and scuba diving as your hobbies on your HF dj page. Given that you now live in London, what do you do to entertain yourself in your spare time when you’re having some time out from the music scene?
I’m mostly working then after that comes my music. I do like to travel, and spend a lot of time travelling back and forth between South Africa and Eastern Europe., as well as seeing friends in the UK and abroad. I try to be everywhere when possible! I do try to be active in London and go to skydiving clubs, play football and watch rugby. And of course have a chill!
You’re both playing in the main room of the Renaissance Rooms with Skazi on New Year’s Day for ResistAnts. Are you big Skazi fans? Who else will you checking out on NYD or will it be a matter of playing the best set you can then getting some sleep?
We have quite a lot of respect for Skazi, even though it’s not really our style, but he’ll surely be rocking the party as everybody should expect from him. As this is quite an unforgettable event, both of us will be playing our best and after that, let’s see what happens… it is New Year’s Day though, can we order a taxi in advance please?!
Finally, you’re both playing at the Fridge on Friday night for the FFF (Fridge Fiver Fridays) Christmas party. What can readers expect from your sets?
Fabry: The crowd can expect some groovy stuff, the essence of groove is the rhythm so let’s keep them moving…
Peter: Expect some twisted, funkadelic deep groovy beats and let’s have a party!!!!!!
We both are looking forward to play a killer set at this amazing night, bringing back memories from the old times which the Fridge provided for many years.

ResistAnts, in collaboration with Never Enough & Antiworld, proudly present: NYDAY with SKAZI Live!
After their successful first ever gig in a big nightclub, when they put up RAVE – The International Indoor Festival last July at SEOne, ResistAnts had a deserved rest, but are now back, bringing to London one of the most influential psytrance acts of the world: New Year’s Day with Skazi Live!, at The Renaissance Rooms.
With support coming from Never Enough and Antiworld, ResistAnts’ Luis Santiago and Helio de Oliveira are two Brazilian who started throwing house parties at their cosy flat in Brixton, in 2003. They used to lock the furniture up in one of the rooms and cover the windows with black curtains, transforming their home into a small club. Venue arranged, decoration and production came from countryman designer Miguel Carvalho – the same one who did Timbalada’s outfits for 2004’s Carnival in Salvador, whereas Portuguese mates DJ Vega and Rui M were in charge of the sound system. The neighbours were also invited, so no one disturbed the party, which went on all night long. At 10am next day, fire fighters turned up, though what was suspected to be smoke, coming out of the windows, turned out to be just an artificial effect.
From that day Luis and Helio realised they no longer could accommodate party-goers in a flat. After all these years, the next big step at ResistAnts’ history was their first event in a proper nightclub. They dared to organise RAVE – The International Festival, booking renowned artists such as Lab4, Proteus, Talamasca, Pixel, Domestic and DJ Murphy, to name but a few.
ResistAnts are ready for their comeback, and this time have prepared a storming New Year’s Day party: an impressive 12-hour gig, kicking-off at 7am and not finishing until 7pm. To welcome 2007, ResistAnts proudly present Israeli psytrance act Skazi, voted TOP 37 DJ by DJ Mag. Coming from a recent tour in Brazil, where they launched the latest work “Total Anarchy”, Skazi, B-Bass & Co. will play live and a DJ set at the Psychedelic Room, supported by Chemical Crew and Antiworld. DJs Kalimamboh, Metaphase, Fortu, Simo and Sutekh are some of the psychedelic mafia members.
Under the Never Enough flagship, the second room is dedicated to progressive, dirty house, electro, breaks, minimal and techno, with sets from Brighton-based Eduardo Herrera, Southampton’s new talent Stu Cox, brazilians DJ Paula, Reaction, Marcio Groove and Lucas Datt, amongst others. For those in need of a faster and harder music policy, DJs Vega, Rui M, Caballeiro and M.A.N. vs Toxigen command the hard dance clubbers. Last, but not least, the chill-out room. Coming from Norway, Bluebeat aka Moni & Askeladden, alongside Danny Stamp, Hemlock and Hefty, plays anything from chilled beats to tribal and tech house. This New Year’s celebration is definitely not for the faint-hearted! So bear it in mind and have a day-off on 2nd January!

SKAZI
The Skazi project is a myth within the psytrance scene. Asher Swissa (guitar) and Assaf B-Bass (synths) have been working together since 1998, producing a unique style of “trance, rock, cyber and punk” music – as they defined themselves recently for DJ Mag. Asher began his career as part of Jerusalem punk rock band Sartan Hashad and three years later joined Rock Ba-Yarok, whereas Assaf has been involved with trance music since 1992, working alongside Yaniv Shulman (aka Mental Orange). Skazi also includes drummer Tamir Bazilai and bassist Guiladen.
The name Skazi was Asher’s nickname, given to him by his childhood friends. Their debut album, “Animal”, launched in 2000, was revolutionary in its sound and direction, culminating with a huge worldwide success. With their influences coming from the punk and hardcore scenes, Skazi brought an innovative twist to psytrance by combining Asher’s live guitar riffs and Assaf’ storming synth-sounds. As a result, “Animal” became an overnight hit, positioning Skazi in the front row of trance creators in the world. The follow-up, “Storm”, came out two years later and kept Skazi on the crest of the ‘psy’ wave, setting out world tours and blowing away crowds in countries such as their home Israel, Japan, Germany, Russia, India, Switzerland and Brazil.
Between 2001 and 2004 Skazi compiled the “Zoo” trilogy and “Most Wanted” compilation, releasing over 100 tracks in innumerous albums worldwide, which made them to keep at the top of the sales charts for months. Skazi's iconic stage performance, featuring Asher's guitar-wielding rock-star poses, combined with a recent string of cheeky remixes of 80's and 90's metal and punk songs (including Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", re-launched as “Smells Like Humos Spirit”; Metallica’s “Seek & Destroy” and Prodigy’s “Voodoo People” and “Out of Space”) has resulted in some pained groans from the psytrance purists. Besides, Skazi have also remixed Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” and Infected Mushroom’s “I Wish”.
In 2005 they launched their first DVD, entitled “Hit & Run World Tour”, with footages of their performances in Israel, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Japan. All Skazi’s productions have been released on their own recording company, Chemical Crew, formerly known as Shaffel Records. The label has not only changed name, but also signed some new artists, under exclusive contracts, such as Void, Exaile, Paranormal Attack and Tube, among others.
This year, Skazi featured for the first time at DJ Mag’s TOP 100 DJs poll, reaching the 37th place. To celebrate it, on 11th November 2006 Skazi did a one-off world jam in Brazil, performing live with Israeli MC Big Fish, Portuguese guitarist Xangai (Paranormal Attack) and Brazilian drummer Igor Cavaleira (Sepultura) at XXXperience’s 10th Birthday party, in São Paulo. Skazi also released their latest album, “Total Anarchy”.
