Pure Gold: Interview with Will Gold Reported by K8-e / Submitted 05-07-10 08:19 I've known Will Gold a long time through the scene and I've followed his work with interest. Back from the days of Riot! Recordings crossover classics such as "The Bronx" (with production partner Jamie Taylor) through to the uplifting and driving euphoria of tunes like Fragile on Phase Seven Records - both staple tunes for me. Of course as well as being a producer Will is also an accomplished DJ having played for Gatecrasher, Passion, and Floorplay to name a few in the decade he's been involved in the scene. Our paths crossed again recently, as Will made the move to Brighton from his hometown of Nottingham a few years ago, and I was fortunate enough to spend some time in the studio with the pair and hear some of their new beats. I was blown away! Having felt a bit jaded in recent times I was pleasantly surprised to be enjoying the chunky, slower, groovier sound I was hearing, certainly enough to dust off my keyboard and see what Will had to say for himself. So where did it all start for you? Where did the passion for music begin and how did you end up behind the decks? Well, I remember being just 15 when I blagged my way into a night called The House in Nottingham. That was the turning point for me, to experience the banging dance music, friendly atmosphere and alternative scene was mind blowing. Within a couple of years I had my first set of decks and an eternal love for dance music was born. I then went through the motions of playing house parties and bars for free before landing my first proper residency at Religion before progressing to become Nottingham's Gatecrasher resident and beyond. So what prompted the move to production and a desire to "make" the music as well as play it? For me it's always been about the music, and there's no more natural step forward from DJing than to learn to write your own tracks. The satisfaction of playing your own creation out to an audience, hearing it played on Radio 1 and spun by the world's greatest DJs takes some beating and has to come ahead of playing other people's tune you've simply selected. What's that wonderful old quote and cliche? 'The dj is only as good as the record' and there's a lot of truth in that! You've long worked with production genius Jamie Taylor - how did that partnership come about? Jamie and I were introduced when I was DJing at Meganite (Mauro Picotto's Ibizan superclub night) in 2003.  A friendship was born and we developed as DJs and producers over the next few years and have never looked back. I still remember our first collaboration 'The Bronx' (on Riot! Recordings) being played on Radio 1 by Judge Jules and how buzzing we were! If only we'd known that was to be the first of many broadcasts of our tunes, thankfully continuing to this very day. What are your weapons of choice in the studio? Now then, good question, and I think you'd get a different answer from every producer out there. There's a lot of politics and nonsense floating about as to whether Mac is better than a PC, Logic rules over Cubase and so on, to be honest it doesn't matter, if you can get the vibe and achieve a polished mix down, who cares? I personally use hardware synths and compressors with a PC, namely the Virus TI, Cubase and a whole lot of magic! I've seen the video of Tiesto closing Privilege in Ibiza with your stomper "Fragile" but he isn't the only 'superstar' DJ you've had support from, you mentioned the regular plays on Radio 1 dance shows and I know you've had support from Eddie Halliwell, Carl Cox and more. How does it feel when you watch something like that back? It makes me feel great! Whilst me playing my own tracks is the best feeling, it's nice to have that assurance that my tunes are along the right lines when I watch 10,000 clubbers rocking to a track I made in my little flat! The continual Radio 1 support matches it and makes all the hard work pay off. It's satisfying to think of 6 million people listening in on a Saturday night and having just heard my track and name read out live. Looking at your back catalogue of tunes it's quite hard to pigeon hole your sound - how would you describe your style today and what can people expect when they see you play? Thanks, that's definitely a compliment. Dance music had changed over the 10 years I've been involved with it, you find yourself moving with the times. My current sound is real cross-over stuff, big room house with techno and electronic influences, it's hard to describe. You'll have to catch my next gig to sample the genre-busting flavour! Where do you take your inspiration from for your tunes? I guess the inspiration comes from the heart, but also from playing out regularly and listening to other producer's music, buying tracks and being sent them. I know what I like, what works well in the clubs and whatever I compose in the studio comes out along the right lines. I think it's catching a balance of being creative and individual, but embracing and celebrating other sounds and influences out there. What are the top tunes in your "box" right now? Will Gold - Havana Prok & Fitch - California Roll Will Gold - Empty Promise (Will Gold Recycled Mix) Jamie Taylor - Confused Tiesto Vs Diplo - C'mon You've played a fair few gigs abroad from Poland to Italy - how do you find the scene and the clubbers in different countries? Any stories to share? Now you're asking! The European experiences have to be some of the best. It's fascinating seeing different club cultures, from the posey venues of Milan to the raw dance floors of Crakow I love 'em all. I've been in all sorts of predicaments on my travels, some of which I can't share now! The rest involve DJing in the Switz mountains, 'roughing it' in Italy after missing a flight and a 3 day tour in Poland with Mr Jamie Taylor, not for the faint hearted. You've also played on some pretty impressive line ups in the UK holding a residency for Northern club Religion and gracing the decks at Gatecrasher. What's your favourite gig to date? That's a tricky one. Those early days at Religion will always hold a special place in my heart without doubt, especially our 3rd Birthday. More recently it has to be late set after Armin Van Buuren or warming up for Eddie Halliwell, all courtesy of Gatecrasher. Two years ago you made a massive move from your home town of Nottingham down to the sunny South Coast, and you now live in Brighton. Are you enjoying it down South? I can honestly say it's probably the best thing I've every done. Brighton has to be one of the coolest plays to live and is only a stones throw away from London. I really fell on my feet shortly after the move too when I caught the attention of Brighton based Prok & Fitch, the UK's hottest house duo - they run the forward thinking 'Floorplay' night and I've been lucky enough to have regular guest slots there. Keep an eye on Ben Prok and James Fitch, they're superstars in the making for sure. What are your plans for the rest of 2010 and beyond? I've never been busier in the studio and hope to keep it that way. Expect some big releases forthcoming, namely my remix of "Empty Promise" on Phase Seven Records with early support from Sander Van Doorn and Marco V. I'll be up and down the country playing for Gatecrasher and am getting fired up for my return to Floorplay in July, which promises to be huge!
