The Thirsty DJs interview at 4clubbers.net
(extracted from http://www.4clubbers.net/interviews/thirstydjs.htm)
This weekend sees the next Hard House Academy - and it be the legendary event that it is - 5000 people are already camping outside Brixton Academy to get in. Anyway, The Thirsty DJs are a mix and match bunch of House DJs that are rising through the DJ ranks and are now hosting their very own room at this amazing event. We got to speak to Richard Chew, one of the crew about this that and bit of Hard House Academy.
So then Mr. Chew, how long have you been djing? And what styles do you play?
I have been DJ-ing for more than 2 years since arriving in London about 4 years ago from Auckland, New Zealand. I started playing out hard house and trance initially but really got into the funky house scene since mid last year.
What inspired you to set up The Thirsty Dj's?
The Thirsty DJs concept came about after playing at the Retox Bar, Covent Garden when I got together a few up and coming and bedroom DJs wanting to play out. Since our first gig, we were offered a monthly residency and we called it Thirsty Thursday @ Retox. The idea was to get quality funky house DJs together for a good night out as a warm up for the weekend. Furthermore, any major promoters will be assured of a superb line-up when we host their funky house room at their events.
What have been three of your favourite Thirsty events so far?
All of the Thirsty DJs events are wicked but the 3 best were Frantic's Convergence@Egg, Frantic NYD@Ministry of Sound and Heat@Turnmills. We are very thankful to all our fans for their support that we have come a long way from playing at a bar to excellent venues around London in such a short space of time.
The Thirsty Dj's absolutely took over Egg's Champagne Bar at Frantic's Convergence in January but where else can we catch you lot?
Yes it absolutely rocked when Thirsty DJs hosted the Champagne Bar at Egg in association with Frantic's Convergence and the crowd and DJs loved every minute of it. We plan to do the same at the Funky VIP balcony bar, Brixton Carling Academy in association with Frantic's legendary Hard House Academy on Sat, 28th Feb 2004. There are also more Thirsty DJs gigs planned for 2004 so watch this space!
How do you go about choosing people to become part of the Thirsty Dj's?
We have approximately 20 DJs on rotation and 5 main Thirsty DJs residents playing at our events with special guests at most events. All the DJs are carefully selected based on their demos received with excellent tune selection mixed flawlessly. They then get a trial session at the Retox Bar to see how the crowd reacted and mixing out of their bedrooms for some DJs. Once they perform well and based on excellent feedback from other DJs and clubbers, they get re-booked at bigger events when Thirsty DJs host the house room for other promotions. If they have been dedicated, loyal, committed and also assist in promoting the Thirsty DJs brand plus getting a good following, they will become a Thirsty DJs resident.
Which of the Thirsty Dj's do you think is going to make it big, and why?
The 3 to watch out for in 2004 will be Richard Launch, Darz and Adam May due to their commitment and love for the scene. They also push themselves out there to maximise their exposure by getting as many gigs as possible on top of playing wicked sets at most of their gigs.
If you could put on your dream Thirsty Dj's Event what would it be and where?
My ultimate dream has always been putting an event at any club/bar at Ibiza or internationally with a few big name and wicked DJs who gets the crowd going all night/day long. Hopefully with a bit of luck and determination, it will happen this year or the next. Otherwise, we will keep enjoying ourselves playing at various London/UK venues.
What does it mean for Thirsty Dj's to be part of Hard House Academy and what can we expect from your room?
As mentioned above, it will be an awesome achievement for Thirsty DJs to be part of HHA as it's the biggest event for Frantic and the Hard Dance scene in London where most established and well known DJs play including the most up and coming DJs in the scene. Quality funky house music with an electric atmosphere is expected during the Thirsty DJs sessions at the VIP balcony where everyone will have a fantastic time including the DJs! Also note that we will have the legendary Steve Hill playing a funky house set with Thirsty DJs after his hard house set in the main arena.
Why do you think more and more people from the hard house community are getting into the funkier side of things?
Tricky question and it's very subjective. In my opinion, when more people have been to a funky house event outside the hard dance scene or checked out some of the wicked funky events at Ibiza, they get more into the funkier side with the hard driving jacking house edge and of course the crowd is different depending on the event.
This is also aided by more and more hard house events having a funky house room with Hard Dance DJs playing funky house as well as hard house/trance. Last but not least, the venues are getting a lot slicker and clean where funky clubbers can enjoy a lush environment and atmosphere.
And we left it there. We are sure to hear more about these guys though. But the Thirsty DJs seem to the new kids on the block causing a stir in London. They are hosting rooms for Frantic already so they must be doing something right!
