Desert Dwellers feat. Paul Stamets

» One Giant Consciousness

Reviewed by Pete M / Submitted 26-03-21 16:47

Label: Desert Trax
Format: Digital
Genre: Ambient / Electronica

The Desert Dwellers emerge now with their new single, a collaboration with mycologist Paul Stamets. Mycology, if you didn't know, is the study of fungi and their role in medicine and food as well as their dangers. The track touches on the unique biological nature of fungi with vocals by Stamets.

The track is different from the Dwellers' usual output. Its taken from the Fantastic Fungi concept album, a two volume album, which was inspired by the documentary film of the same name. Pulsing rhythms and bass-lines are plentiful here; remixes come from Tylepathy, GUMI, Nanosphere, Hibernation and Equanimous x Skysia.

For me, the best version is the Original Mix but the remixes add some wholesome flavouring to the package. The Tylepathy mix is beatless ambient and follows similar remixes for Liquid Bloom's Re:Gen project. The mix by Gumi follows the same dub pattern but enhances it, adding a sense of wonder to the track.

Nanosphere's breaks approach is cool. Like the Gumi mix, its suitable for both lounging and shuffling. Hibernation and Equanimous x Skysia bring up the rear. The Tylepathy mix I've already covered. A good remix package for an interesting track. Smile
