June Trance Chart
(artist/title/mix/label)
(1.) Filo & Peri: ‘Anthem’ (John O’Callaghan remix) – Vandit
There’s something almost breathtakingly stupid about the vocal and this is one of those tunes as many people hate as others love. Putting that aside, this is a wonderful track for putting smiles on faces – which is what dance music’s all about for me – and is made even better by J O’C’s flawless production.
(2.) Orchid Star: ‘Passion’ (Sly One vs Jurrane remix) – CDR
Finished and sounding beautiful. Couldn’t be any further apart from ‘Time Bomb’ if it tried but it’s nice to do something different now and again. We’re now starting work on our next remix: a rework of the superb ‘Now & Then’ from Ground Control, forthcoming on Emalodic.
(3.) Sly One vs Jurrane: ‘Time Bomb’ (Tom Colontonio remix) – Discover Dark
John Askew’s charted this at #1 in his regular monthly chart and we’re thrilled with what US producer Tom Colontonio’s done with the track. It’s lost none of the energy but is beautifully programmed and will help the release appeal to a very wide market when it comes out in the summer.
(4.) Dave 202: 'Rain Against Her' (Neal Scarborough remix) - Captivating
If I could pick one producer to be the standout player in 2007, it’d be Neal Scarborough. One half of Inertia (along with John O’Callaghan), Neal’s beginning to make a name for himself with some superb solo remixes. Excellent stuff.
(5.) Sunny Lax: ‘Bluebird’ (Daniel Kandi remix) – Anjunabeats
Anjuna churn this sort of stuff out in their sleep but this classy remix is a cut above the rest thanks to Daniel Kandi. Perfect blissed-out 1am trance: this is one of those tunes to check out if you think trance has gone all tech and lost its melody.
(6.) Aled Mann: ‘Cause & Effect’ (original mix) – Discover
Aled Mann’s second original release on Discover has all the hallmarks of its parent label without sounding derivative or unoriginal. Very credible, very tough and sky-high production values: I could listen to this tune all day.
(7.) Alex Morph vs Rank 1: ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ (Activa pres. Mekk remix) – High Contrast
Rob Stevenson aka Activa alias Mekk supplies the pick of the remixes of this strong package from Dutch label High Contrast. The Alex Morph Extended mix is also nice (with more than a nod to Marco V) but I’m liking the direction of the Mekk remix: deep, dark, hypnotic and banging.
(8.) Six Senses pres. Xposure: ‘Niagara’ (Aly & Fila remix) – Conspiracy
Big-sounding euphoric trance courtesy of this Aly & Fila remix, producers who can seemingly do no wrong at the moment. Another of those tracks to play to those who say trance has lost its melodic roots.
(9.) The Viceroy: ‘Endgame’ (Nicholas Bennison remix) – Flux Delux
Both the Original and Nicholas Bennison remixes have been supported by virtually every big-name trance DJ under the sun (including the likes of Armin and Tiesto). Both mixes are superb but it’s the Nicholas Bennison rework which edges it for me with its dark, driving, psy-influenced feel.
(10.) Lokhen: ‘Northern Winds’ (Sequentia remix) – Six Thirty
After a few months break, Six Thirty are back with the usual high-quality melodic trance they’re famous for. Dutch/German production team Sequentia provide the standout mix which wouldn’t sound at all out of place on the various Armin imprints. Very nice indeed.
