Dr Duzzit I presume?

Reported by Ed Real / Submitted 23-03-07 12:25

Harderfaster regulars will all have seen the work of Tony Phillips, better known as Dr Duzzit, on the forums. A tireless worker spreading positive vibes about each event he either promotes or presents, some might say he’s one of the best loved posters on the board. Behind the scenes the good Doctor works tirelessly to keep the hard dance vibe alive for clubbers and every weekend you’ll find him relocated from his surgery in Kent to the dancefloors of London spreading the word.

This year sees him elevate his status and join the big guns on the decks at prestigious events like Polysexual South while this weekend sees one of his own promotions HecticUK celebrate its 3rd birthday. Ed Real caught up with him in the run up to this milestone to see just what goes into being one of the busiest and most respected figures in the London underground.

ER: Give us a potted history of Dr Duzzit [where, when, etc]

Well it all started in 1997 on the outdoor scene in Kent and Sussex. We managed to create a London style hard house event in a local hotel function room. Around 300 people turned up to see Darren Pearce, Skol, Rooster and Drew headline the first ever EZ Duzzit event. After 5 years of mad partying in Kent we moved to London in January 2002 and took 190 marching fans with us to The Viaduct for our debut @ Smile Clubbing UK. From there it’s progressed at a steady rate each year and I've loved every minute of it.

ER: Who inspired you to take up DJing and promoting?

I’ve been into dance music forever and ever since I put on my first party it’s just taken over my life. Before 1997 we had house parties and even a few beach parties in mid summer and so I slowly began to understand what a clubber wants from a good night out. It’s turned me into an atmosphere junkie, I love soaking up a good vibe, that’s what drives me on.

ER: Where did the name Dr Duzzit come from?

Dr Duzzit was made up after EZ Duzzit. A mate made the name up one night on magic mushrooms and because I was running the show it stuck like glue till this very day. I went with it because there was already a Judge, a Dentist and a Captain so thought there would be room for a Doctor. I’ve been on a few internet and pirate radio stations and one day I would love to do my own show, The Doctors Surgery, on Radio 1 or Ministry Radio. You never know!!

ER: You’re well respected for pushing new talent at your parties. Who is doing it for you at the moment and how do you get to choose which of the new school to book?

Micky Fallout, Eddie H and Lisa London are DJs that are doing it for me at the moment and I take great pride in helping people become established in London, I’ve even taken people out to Ibiza, Holland and Germany. We have another trip to Holland coming up on the 27th May with HecticUK but I'm still deciding who’s going to play over the 8 hours I have to fill. JK and Andy McCall are 2 other DJs that I’ve helped in the past and they’re both doing really well having recently played at Tasty and Knowwhere. I like to help DJs that want to help themselves and work hard for our beloved party scene.

ER: What tips would you give to new DJ’s to get themselves heard and on the decks?

Follow your dreams and work hard. If you really want to get noticed then you will and you’ll get to play gigs that get you noticed on the scene. Production has a massive part to play as well but not always at the start of any career, so do yourself a demo mix CD and go to the night you want to play for and drive the promoter mad, you will get there in the end.

ER: There’s been three years of HecticUK – what’s the ethos behind the events?

The 3 years have flown by and I really feel HecticUK has the pedigree to go all the way; I want it to stay as underground as possible to ensure the intimate vibe we thrive on is never lost. It was a tough decision moving it from Brixton but it was either take it to the Fridge or use one of the medium sized venues in Vauxhall. We decided to have a bash at the Factory after our sell out at the Telegraph last November but who knows where it will go next. Monthly events are not on my agenda anymore, well not at the moment anyway.

ER: Tell us about your favourite memories from past HecticUK events?

My favourite memories are from the good old days back where it all started at the George4. We ran every second Friday of the month for 18 months and it was the best 16 hours of the month for me. We turned a club with a walk by trade of around 50 people and rammed it without fail with 300+ punters once a month which then had a knock on effect with all the other parties in there. It became a launch pad for HecticUK and a fantastic chance for the underground scene to be heard with up and coming DJs week in week out.

ER: Quite a few of your crowd travel from outside London to your parties. Is it important to get a tight crew together when promoting?

HecticUK has a good following because its been going strongly for 3 years now. I used to be the sole promoter, organiser etc but now its being run by 7 collective members who have formed The Hectic Collective and we all spread the word. It gives me more time to concentrate on my music and finish off my PA, which will be ready for launch later this year either in August or September. It’s so important to get a good crew behind you as it gets stressful sometimes but the end result is allays well worth it.

ER: Has promoting events helped your DJ career? What advice would you give young DJ’s who want to put on parties?

My first event was in 1997 and it definitely helped me build a massive database over the years. It also helped me get onto the London scene and play my music. Smile was the event that got me playing out all over London over 5 years ago. If I could turn back the clock I would do it all again. If you do want to put on parties my advice is "A promoters work is never done!"

ER: Your ‘24hr’ events have become the stuff of legend! Are you the most hardcore promoter in London!?

24 Hours NYE has become an annual event and the 4th one is being planned already. I don’t know if I’m the most hardcore promoter in London, maybe I was once upon a time, but I have taken this year slower than usual with the parties. I think the London scene will build again and can only grow. Some of the younger talent out there is fantastic and there are loads of foreign clubbers making up the numbers, which is healthy for our scene.

ER: What can we expect this Saturday at the Hectic UK 3rd Birthday?

For the first time we’ll be featuring Live PAs. MDA + Spherical and Orpheus are both highlights along with yourself, Ed Real, and Billy Bunter. We’re running till 10am so its a great option for people that want to party hard in a perfect venue that suits our event. There’s also quite a few birthdays to celebrate on the night so its going to be one to remember. BITFRO as they say.

ER: You recently moved to the country – does this help put some perspective on the crazy weekend world of London hard dance?

Yes I moved out of London because I was never originally from the capital. I’ve been clubbing in London since 1992 and moved there in 2002 to pursue my dream of playing to people who want it every weekend. I’ve done my 5 years solid hard graft and made all the connections I wanted to make. I love the scene in London and to top it all off I want to put on a couple of outdoor events this summer and am currently looking for a couple of promotions that might want to get involved in some out door madness.

ER: I also understand that a little Duzzit is on the way too – do you reckon he or she will be a hard dance fan?

Yeah, I’m well excited about the new addition to the Duzzit empire. I may not get to the status of Tiesto but you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be pushing my kid all the way to the top and beyond. Hard Dance all the way baby.

ER: You’ve got some great gigs coming up. What are you looking forward to?

I feel honoured and believe I have one of the best residencies in hard dance. I recently got taken on as a Polysexual South resident and this year’s the one for me. I had 2 bookings from Polys last year and I have 3 this year to look forward to, especially at Ministry of Sound as it is the dogs bollox of a venue and possibly the most famous clubbing brand in the world. I’m playing main room on May 6th bank holiday weekend and I will have a lot of friends there who will make the night even more special. I also know the venues these guys have booked later this year so watch this space!
