Darren Tate is an London-based producer and DJ with a long and glittering career, having worked with a wide range of international artists and writers. He is also one of the world’s most successful cross over dance producers, having had hits as Jurgen Vries, Angelic, Orion, Citizen Caned and most recently DT8 Project, under which guise he released summer smash ‘The Sun Is Shining (Down On Me)’, and vocal trancer ‘Winter’. Darren owns label Mondo Records and DJ agency Mondo DJs. Not averse to a few cocktails and a chance to talk about his music, Darren was only too happy to answer some questions from the good people of HF, and a few others beside. Even better, Mike Koglin was also hanging about with nothing better to do than submit to a light grilling.

I first met Stefan Ro at a lost Sunday at the Purple Turtle a few years ago and was instantly impressed with his banging but uplifting hard trance, easy going friendly manner and perhaps most of all, his dark sense of humour. But like so many superficial meetings in the club scene, other than knowing he was from Rumania and a bloody good dj, I knew very little about him. Several years later I move into a new flat in North London, and guess who lives just up the road? And has he changed much? Yes and no…. Over the last couple of years he’s played at several major London clubbing venues and promotions, and after seeing him play one of his first electro sets at a house party, I wasn’t surprised to see him start to appear on some top electro lineups, while building up his profile to become a resident at Torture Garden, Byte and most recently Poison.

Baklash take over the IceBox at HeatUK Aftermath '07

Although taking a look through the forums on HF might lead you to believe that there is only one successful regular hard dance afterparty in London — that ain’t the case. Baklash have been plugging away since June 2005 at that legendary crack-on den the 414 in Brixton with their excellent monthly Saturday morning afterparties, featuring their team of bounce loving residents and special guests, and their loyal, friendly crowd. Promoter Mark ‘Fireboy’ and his team aren’t about big headline DJs or making loads of money — they’re about having a damn good time with their mates and listening to the music they love and not wondering about what or who is ‘in’ or what politics are clogging up the scene at any moment. We spoke to Mark about his afterparty’s history as Baklash prepares to host the 2nd room at The Fridge on New Year’s Day morning for HeatUK Aftermath ‘07 — the first hard dance event of the new year!

The *Ting* gets ready for the final countdown of 2006

It all started for The *Ting* aka Zoe Hart back in 1999 when she threw her first ever event, Tranceformation, and became the first promoter ever to take on the whole of SeOne, pulling in over 2500 people. From there she became a resident for Torture Garden, touring the world with the fetish brand and at one point managing their record label. She was then brought in to head Cyberdog’s worldwide musical operations, running their Cyberdance parties, hosting album launch parties and purchasing music for their chain of stores. Leaving Cyberdog in 2003 to concentrate on her own events, she launched Party Proactive and Proactive Records at Camden’s Purple Turtle in 2003. Run with partners Paul Jack, Joanna McEwen and Jacob Moss, Proactive have gone on to become one of the most dynamic brands in the club scene today, running events at Turnmills as well as being involved with NYE at Brixton Academy in association with HeatUK and The Gallery. In typical *Ting* style she has an insane schedule leading up to the event, which includes playing after LAB4’s last London set at The Fridge on Saturday December 30th and hosting the NYE countdown at The Fridge *Live* NYE, with Hed Kandi’s Elisa Mira.

When HarderFaster last spoke with the buoyant superstar DJ Rob Tissera 15 months ago, Hurricane Katrina had just battered America, a new record low was recorded in the amount of sea ice in the Arctic, and Ken Livingstone had just decided that he would be controversially extending London’s congestion zone out to the West. With tornadoes in Kensal Rise, rapid polar ice cap melting and the congestion zone extension coming into play in February, it wouldn’t appear that things have really changed at all! Cut the bullsh*t about Amber D being one of the best female DJs of her generation (and the one before). Amber D is one of the best DJs on the scene period, regardless of whether she’s entitled to wear a skirt or not. Every time someone mentions Amber D, they always make reference to the fact that she’s a girl. Like somehow it separates her from her male counterparts. I bet they wish it did. Without a doubt she gives them a run for their money and then some. From behind the decks she tears through the dancefloor with some of the filthiest, toughest, techiest and at points funkiest hard dance clubbers have been privileged to hear in ages. Innovative, daring, feisty and fearless, right from the start of her career she gave hard dance a much needed lashing, and heralded the start of a new era of DJ superstars.

Time to come out of the fog my friends and into the bright lights. It’s the festive season and clubs are pulling out all stops to thank their supporters for their fun and frolics throughout the year. Both The Gathering and HarderFaster are doing just that this weekend, with all manner of naughtiness afoot at The Gathering Xmas Party tonight at The Fridge and the HF Vs The Residents Christmas Party on Saturday afternoon from noon til eight at Turnmills. Goodgreef take on Frantic at NYE-NEC

Goodgreef is one of those rare success stories in hard dance. Founded in 2000 by then 18 year old Barry Almond, the brand now co-hosts the main arena at Creamfields, has hosted parties at Amnesia in Ibiza with Cream, and hosts regular gigs in Ireland, Holland, Ibiza and Russia as well as all over the North of England. In terms of hard music, it’s one of the most eclectic nights out there, representing the full spectrum of tough dirty music — as Barry points out. “Goodgreef has always been one of the only club nights in the UK that alternates between various genres of hard dance (hard trance, hard house, hardstyle) and trance and techno.” It’s this broad-minded approach that has seen them work with dance music giants like Cream and Slammin’ Vinyl, who have got them on-board at their NYE-NEC event, co-hosting a 2500 capacity arena with Frantic. and has seen everyone from Lady Dana to Marco Bailey play at their events.
