Twisted NYE: 2005 update with Markus Buhmann

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 21-12-05 17:54

2005 is drawing to an end; so it only seemed appropriate to get one of Harderfaster’s musical oracles to give us a kind of unofficial summary of the last 12 months. In December 2001 Harderfaster gave birth to Markus Buhmann. With a member number of 277 he became part of the ‘old skool’, a group of hard dance lovers who’d had discovered a fun way to waste their days trying to outwit each other with hilarious banter (well they thought it was), insufferable pedantry, and ways to annoy Shaun Rowland, Shaf De Bass and Paul Reeves.

Markus at Spangulation

“Back in the Day” as they say, there were of course far less users (last count was 20171). Nearly 5 years on both Harderfaster and Markus have evolved considerably. Not only does he continue to be part of the DNA of Harderfaster but he’s now a sought after DJ on the London dance music circuit.

When I first met him he’d just learnt to beat-match and was passionately building up a diverse and interesting collection of records. Today about three and half years on (is it really that long?!) he not only continues to be a regular, and often opinionated, poster on the site that brings us together, but Markus is also a well-loved DJ who appears on the line-ups of some London’s biggest parties. With an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music tracks and mixes his sets are stuffed full of a tracks which span trance, progressive, tech-trance, breaks, some hard dance and a good smattering of anything in between.

To end your 2005, you can catch Markus playing the main room at Twisted NYE, alongside a cast which also includes Steve Hill and Nick Sentience; but before then, let’s meet Markus.

What’s your thoughts on minimal techno?

It’s the Emperor’s New Clothes, literally. It’s been around for ages, the scenesters have declared it cool, like they did trance, hard house (briefly), electro, breaks and psy trance before this. From what I’ve heard I do find it a bit dull to be honest. However it’s new spiritual home DC10 was cool last year and the year before.

If you were sent to a desert island and you were allowed to take two DJs with you, who would play daily, who would you pick?

From the international circuit, Michel De Hey and Steve Porter, and from the London scene, Steve Hitch and Daegal Brain.

I managed to catch Michel De Hey in Ibiza this year, 3 hour warm up for Carl Cox and it was stunning, builds and drops, constant progression and movement, a masterclass in set construction, amazing. I also saw Steve Porter at the Gallery this year, he’s as good a DJ as he is a producer, nuff said.

From London, Steve Hitch and Daegal Brain continue to do their own thing musically and are great DJs as well as being great guys.

Playing at Faith

What do you think of internet forums. Do you think they are good for the scene, or in some way detrimental to the scene?

I think they’re a good thing on the whole, lots of positive stuff has happened through people going online and saying their piece. I think it keeps everyone on their toes from a promotional viewpoint more honest.

The downsides of endless self promotion and the banality of a lot of the discussion can get tiresome at times, but the instant, mostly honest feedback and the sense of community more than make up for it. Overall, internet forums are good.

What are you hoping to get for Christmas this year?

A couple of tunes signed and maybe an overseas residency. Seriously though, I just want my friends and loved ones to be happy and healthy. Actually, maybe if I could have a pair of CDJ 1000 Mk2s delivered to my house that would be great.

What’s been your DJing highlight in 2005?

Easy, playing my first main room gig at Extreme Euphoria and James Lawson asking me to keep going over time.

What’s been your funniest moment of 2005?

The opening and closing weekends of the Sketch Terrace and Cafe Del Markus, your archetypal lost weekends. We spent the opening party looking for monkey eggs but couldn’t find them unfortunely.

Also, meeting a random girl in Cream in Ibiza who turned out to be an HFer, and who starts singing the praises of your mates’ DJing while Paul Oakenfold is having what could only be described as a shocker (Hi Mariella Waves ).

Thanks for Anuska007, Crimson Crazy Fool, MalcyP, Manne and *presh* for their photography.
