When it all goes Pete Tong – a promoter’s tale

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 31-05-06 20:07

This is not a review, that’s been done already. What I intend to do here is shine a little light on the events which lead up to the Logic v Antiworld event at the Dog Star and offer some explanations as to why and how this event came about.

First of all we need to go back a few weeks to the well-publicised raid on The Fridge nightclub by the boys in blue. I’m not here to debate the rights and wrongs of such an issue; the authorities, in their wisdom decided to take the action and as such that really is the end of proceedings as there is nothing anyone can do. Of course the outcome was to have major repercussions for all the promotions that had planned events there in the following weeks.

Anyway, back to Logic v Antiworld: promoting and organising the event was proceeding in relatively normal terms prior to the raid and even though it came as a shock to all concerned, the promoters were assured that the event would go ahead regardless and everything was under control.

Then, the following week, a mere nine days before kick-off, The Fridge management were summoned to court for a hearing as a direct result of the Police raid. Recommendations by the Police and the local authorities meant work needed to be carried out on the venue and until such time the venue would remain closed for business. Of course this would mean no Breaking of any System Down would be taking place as advertised, it really had all gone Pete Tong!

By this time of course the promoters are well into the final production meetings with all the sound, lighting and laser crew’s as well as the venue staff, blissfully unaware that the rug was about to be pulled in no uncertain terms from under their feet. It’s at this point I hand you over to Shaf De Bass, Logic resident and co-promoter to explain.

“After eventually coming to some decisions and agreeing that we are happy with everything production wise we decide to head out of the fridge and with one foot out the door my phone rings and I’m being informed that the courts have just shut the venue. I call to Dave (Logic) and Enrico (Antiworld) who are literally 10 metres ahead of me to break the bad news. Dave turns round and steps into a huge puddle of ketchup that had been spilt from the nearby McDonalds — this was quite symbolic at the time of the news I had to give them — haha!

Anyway, I drop the bombshell on them about what I had been told and the looks on their faces get stuck between shock, horror and total disbelief before a quick communal bout of hysterical laughing at how unlucky we felt at that given moment.”

So that was it, no venue. Well, when the going gets tough, the tough . . . erm, go to the pub and that’s exactly what they did. It was time to assess the situation and act accordingly. Time was running short but making a decision as to what was going to happen next was not to be taken lightly. Back over to Shaf.

“As far as we were aware we were told that there was a chance we could still go on at the fridge so we decided to hold out for that, but also to start work on a contingency plan immediately. Most importantly we made sure we would be completely straight-up and honest with everyone which was reflected in our press releases that we regularly updated in the run up to the event.

Our decisions were based on the fact that we had sold too many tickets to cancel completely as there was no way we could contact everyone and let them know — this would of course mean that clubbers would be turning up in Brixton for a party that wasn’t going to happen, something we, as promoters really weren’t happy with. We decided that we HAD to put something on regardless and if the people attending were not happy with it, then they would be entitled to compensation.”

Of course this was easier said than done. Getting a venue was proving to be almost impossible. The shortness of timescale meant many venues were already committed to other bookings or the management involved, fully aware of the situation, took advantage by offering unrealistic terms. I know all businesses need to be commercially viable but this kind of mercenary standpoint is the kind of thing that benefits no one in the long term, least of all the promoters just trying to put on a party at short notice.

With now only five days to go the promoters were finally informed that The Fridge would indeed be closed and the event would have to be moved or cancelled. A final word from Shaf:

“At this point we were getting seriously worried and again we considered cancelling. Our final decision was made due to the phone calls and support from all our friends, loyal clubbers and industry contacts — and eventually sat round a table, 3 scrunched up bits of paper with decisions on, and we took it in turns to pick one.

The result was unanimous . . . ”

The fact that anything at all went ahead is a testament to the dedication and down right stubbornness of all involved. It would have been much easier just to cancel everything from the start and write it off as bad luck and walk away, but as we’ve seen the easy way is not always the best way, the show must always go on!

So how did it turn out? I’ll let those more qualified than I have their say and if you weren’t there you can draw your own conclusions.

Kym Newman (Queen of Clubs Artist & DJ Management)
“Hats off to Enrico from Antiworld and to Dave from Logic — against all the odds on a Bank Holiday weekend, they worked very hard in managing to salvage a show that many people were really looking forward to — and with great success — the place was rammed, the DJs were class and the vibe was one of the highest I’ve experienced in a while . . . . The crowd who came along to support Break the System Down despite the hassles with a last minute venue change also deserve real acknowledgement — because without their energy and happy faces, it could not have been the raging success that it ended up being on the night.”

K90
“I thoroughly enjoyed the event! I think all the drama regarding venue changes and stuff actually added to it in the end! It reminded me of events back in the day when you were never really sure if the party was going to happen and then when it does . . . . Wahay! It’s always great when you've got the crowd right in your face . . . I do enjoy the big events but when you’ve got that kind of close contact with your audience there's nothing quite like it!

Respect to Enrico, Dave, Shaf and everyone connected with Antiworld and Logic! All the perseverance truly paid off in the end!!!”

So that is most certainly that. Job done. All concerned may have a few more grey hairs but I think they’ll no doubt agree the hassle was probably worth it in the end. So next time any of you budding promoters out there think you’ve got what it takes to put on an event such as this take a look at back and ask yourself the question, “Would I have cancelled?”

See you on the dance floor!

Note: For those that missed the event at the Dog Star the next Logic will be on the 29th July and yes, you’ve guessed it . . . back at The Fridge!

Add your comments here !I am surprised that this article is almost an apology, for what in my opinion was one of the best nights, so far this year. The Dog star was so much better than it ever could have been at the Fridge.
