» Liam PRODIGY - Back To Mine

Reviewed by Norris123 / Submitted 16-01-06 17:15

Label: DMC
Format: CD
Genre: Various

Prodigy’s main man, sometimes described as “the brains” behind the group’s success, has compiled an ‘inspirations’ album for us to take a look at what has got his juices flowing over the past two decades. The ‘Back to Mine’ series have given us an insight into the influences of some of the greatest talents of our time, including Groove Armada, New Order and Underworld.

“I put this record together because it’s like a photo album to me. 20 years of musical inspiration, memories and good times. Something to keep.”
– Liam Howlett – December 2005

The opening track of the album is the exclusive unreleased Prodigy track, aptly named “Wake The Fuck Up”…to ‘crack on’ with this guy ,must have meant only the true hardcore would be able to keep up:

“The idea that a Back To Mine compilation should be mellow makes me laugh. Surely the fun begins when you get home! Sometimes it’s so good I don’t bother goin’ out. Diversity is the key for me, that’s just what I’m about.” – LM

Personal highlights for me are Max Romeo’s ‘I Chase The Devil’ which everyone will recognise as soon as they hear it, and Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ just for pure childhood memories…

The Prodigy were my first taste of ‘break-beat hardcore’ dance music in the very early 1990s and were a great influence to both the underground and the mainstream scenes respectively. Here’s a chance to now take a look deeper into what influenced them, to influence us…
