Niklas Harding gets all shipshape for Electronic Sessions

Reported by Roscosulli / Submitted 05-12-07 22:33

Niklas Harding needs no introduction. One of Armada's most prized possessions and an Electronic Sessions resident since April, he's delivered the goods time and time again. He has already DJed all over the world this year with a very special residency to be announced soon in the southern hemisphere. It wont be long before this guy is really taking over the trance scene! Roscosulli caught up with him in anticipation for his appearance at the ES Xmas Party.

ES: Hi Niklas, so hows thing's with you, having a good 2007?

NK: Hi! Yeah, I’m having a good time. Been really busy with the studies over the past year but it’s getting a bit more calm these days. I’m done for now till next summer, so really looking forward to being able to concentrate 100% on my music.

ES: What would you say best describes the type of sound your playing at the moment?

It’s hard to put any specific genre on it. There arent too many DJs who dare to play that much across genres as I’m doing these days. But I think it atracts a really nice crowd, because people who know my style, know I’m capable of playing everything from house to trance, so I can get away with playing a lot of different things and people still seem to enjoy it. It’s not about which genre you play, its how you do it, and how you build up a set, not to many DJs are good at this in my opinion.

ES: Where is your faviourite place to play in the UK and what do you think in general with the scene here, and in London for that matter?

I would say either London or Glasgow, but its two different crowds really. People in Glasgow just go mad for whatever you play and are just at the club to have a really good time, that shines through from everybody when I’m up there spinning. In general London has a very well educated crowd, when I’ve played at The Gallery or at the ES parties for example, people always come up to me and speak about tracks, new music etc. A lot of them really show interest in the music and don’t only go clubbing to show off, get laid and parade their bling.

ES: Your from Copenhagen originally, what is the scene like over there in Denmark?

The scene in Copenhagen has been going up and down alot. Around 2001 we had a big trance club where all the major DJs came to visit. It died out but within the past 18 months there have been a lot of house clubs and electronic music events and clubs popping up, which is really nice to see. The more “we” can get away from the MTV bandwagon the better.

ES: Do you get to go out clubbing much and what dj's do you really admire?

Yeah, I do go clubbing when the time is there. I’ve always admired Tiesto and his performance and way of building tracks, I know it sounds cliche but he’s really one of the few DJs I can enjoy every time I see him. Local hero Trentemoller has had a big impact on the electronic scene around here, he’s doing a really good job, mainly as an artist not so much as a DJ.

ES: After looking through your diary dates it seems as though your playing all over the world these days. What is your faviourite foreign country to play and where are you yet to play that is an absolute must?

I’ve been around in 2007! I just feel lucky I am able to travel around the world with my expenses paid and have a really good time, not many people at my age are able to do that. My favourite place of 2007, would probably be Poland, I had an amazing gig there this summer at a big festival and people definitly knew how to go crazy. The must play place would be a place like Amnesia at Ibiza, I’ve never been there on holiday, but everybody I hear from says that club is magic. Either that or one of the big festivals in Holland is my aim for the near future.

ES: What is the best club you have ever played and why?

Club wise I would say Ministry Of Sound in Singapore, that club is just amazing, such a nice DJ booth, good crowd. When it comes to the atmosphere I gotta say my gig at The Gallery’s 12th birthday, closing down after Armin was quite an experience, really good club atmosphere and friendly people.

ES: Who are your biggest influences production wise?

I can’t say I have any specific people I gather influences from, during one week I listen to a lot of music and whenever I go to the studio some of those cool ideas and things I’ve heard during the week I work on. I live with two roommates who have really different styles in music, so here at home I listen to everything from heavy metal to hip-hop, I’ve gotten used to a lot of music genres.

ES: Do you prefer to play massive events and festivals or smaller more intimate venues?

Both have their advantages. A small venue can really make an intimate atmosphere and it’s possible for people to come up and speak to me about everything from what my favorite dish is to if I believe in god. I like to socialize with people when im out! Big festivals, however, just give you this certain rush, playing infront of 8-10.000 people just cant be described in words, it’s almost as good as sex.

ES: Restaurant or Take away?

Restaurants, but quality take aways will do as well. I’m not really picky about what food I eat, as long its good.

ES: Have you managed to relax and take a holiday this year?

Not really, when I havent had the gigs, I’ve had some projects at uni or exam stuff going on, so I sometimes wish the day consisted of 36 hours instead of 24. (Don’t we all – Ed)

ES: So what new material have you been working on that we can look forward to?

I recently finished a new banging track with a friend of mine, the track is called Saturn and it’s signed to Andy Moor’s AVA Recordings. There’s also a remix: Paul Mendez & Zero3Tonic (Niklas Harding mix), both can be listened to on the jukebox on my homepage. But there’s definitely more stuff being worked on, so I’m sure 2008 will be a good year for my productions.

ES: How did you get your first big break DJing?

Things really started to take off, after my first production got signed to Armada, around 2 and a half years ago. More and more gigs came in, and I was really surprised that a lot of people knew my tracks when I was around playing.

ES: This will be your 3rd appearance now for ES as part of your residency. How are you finding it?

I’ve been really happy that to have had the chance to becoming a ES resident, they are always good gigs and good times. It’s nice to see it’s possible to gather a lot of people who care about the music together and know how to get drunk and have a good time.

ES: The UK must feel like a second home now! Any thoughts to moving here?

I’ve been quite a frequent visitor indeed, and I definitely like the UK and its people, they have similar mentality and humor to the Danish people. Moving there, who knows? Nobody can predict the future. But as long I feel good living where I do, there is no point in changing that!

ES: Thanks for taking the time out to chat to us Niklas, what can we expect to hear from your set?

Your welcome! Expect exclusive airplay for some new tracks and remixes, for example those I mentioned earlier and maybe a classic or two, one track in particular that seems to have turned into a tradition for the boat parties!
