Interview with Steve Morley

Since the early 90s Alici aka Steve Morley has been creating dance music for us all to enjoy. By 1998 his discography was so huge that many djs out there had at least one of his tracks in their record boxes, resulting in major support. It is names such as Steve Morley that are the very history of the dance music industry and names like this should not be forgotten in a hurry.
With an artillery of guest spots at some of the hottest nights through the land, including; Cream, Trade, Heat and Knowwhere to name just a few, we find out what the man behind hits such as ‘Reincarnations’, ‘Starchild’, ‘Redemption’, as well as Dave Holmes’ ‘Samsara’, is doing now since his move from Holland to the UK. An interview of fact as well as great passion, we give you for the very first time on HarderFaster soils, the history and legend that is, Steve Morley.
Alici many thanks for taking time to answer some long awaited questions for what I’m led to believe is your very first interview for HarderFaster? So what started the ball rolling with your Steve Morley guise, as well as your Dave Holmes guise?
The first track released under Steve Morley was ‘Reincarnations’ and with Dave Holmes it was ‘Samsara’. I already had a bag of other guises which I was releasing under and the records were all selling well. I did not anticipate the overwhelming reactions on them though, it only came to my attention years later how big these tracks really were.
Do you think living in Holland helped you musically, with more advanced sounds than the UK at the time? Your were generating music on an upper level with vast European coverage, air play and of course on the dance floors!
Yes that was a huge advantage at the time, as all the big trance tunes were coming from Holland. The UK was the most important market though, all the eyes of producers and record labels were on what was going on here. If you had your tracks played on Radio1 you knew you had a big track on your hands.
Times have certainly changed now, since those days, what are you thoughts on the dance music industry right now?
The music industry is in a poor state at the moment. The inevitable changes in technology and consumer behaviour have all played a major part. However the industry is still adjusting and is showing signs of improvement and I’m sure this will continue.
With the amount of releases and guises under your belt, surely it’s about time we saw some more long awaited Steve Morley action hitting those record stores very soon? What’s coming up release wise for you in the future to aid in this music industry improvement structure?
At the moment a new EP is out on Black Tiger Records. I’ve just signed another single to them as well, which is very special to me as that release will be dedicated to my father who passed away two years ago. Besides that I just finished a remix for TK-421 records and am currently working on three new tracks. And to keep things up a new Steve Morley & Jessica B single will be out soon on Inspired Records followed by three re-releases of my old tunes on Elasticman Platinum.
You’ve dj’ed in many great clubs along with some of the greatest names out there, along with having had residencies in Ibiza as well as London. What’s the dj world of Steve Morley been like over the years? No doubt some memorable experiences have been had?
For starters I could not wish for a better job! No gig is the same and it’s always great fun. But it is more then that to me, it’s like a religion, a big and very important part of my life. A gig starts for me a week or so before the actual date with looking for the right tunes, editing, practising and trying new things out. I don’t think I will ever be able to retire from it!
There have been so many memorable experiences but one that springs in mind must be the one in Paris in the early 90s. I was booked to do a live PA and after setting up and checking out some of the other djs and crowd I was heading back to my shared dressing room to change my outfit and imagine my surprise when I opened the dressing room door to find a well known German Ddjengaged in a ‘private’ session with a female Italian dj inviting me to join in!
This really amplifies the dedication you truly have for the dance industry! What is the secret to your motivation? I understand you are also looking at more residencies within the UK?
The motivation has always been the purity of the music and the emotions it triggers. There is nothing that makes a better view then a packed venue where the crowd has become one with the dj, together on a magical journey. I’m always interested in residencies as they gives you the chance to create a bond with the crowd over time and allow you to try new things.
Resident bonding is a very significant part of an event. You mention the phrase, “magical journey,” do you find that along the path this magic has been perhaps lost in many situations? What are your views regarding the dj sets that are only an hour long? Surely these hardly give the dj a chance to play a set taking the party goers on a musical journey?
Unfortunately things have changed a lot in clubland due to the fact that a vast amount of people have entered the industry with the wrong intentions and for the wrong reasons. There are still good parties though, where you will find those magical feelings, mostly at events from promoters who love and understand the music and the foundations the whole scene was build on. To take people on a journey a dj certainly needs more time then an hour, preferably three or four. But on festivals and big one off events a 1 hour set is not too bad as these events require a more pumped up energy level.
With this in mind what can we expect from a typical Steve Morley set and what’s behind this magic?
A very emotional, driving, innovative and explosive set I guess. It’s all about feelings, telling a tale. In order to do this right you will have to read and feel the crowd and be able to transfer your own feelings trough the tunes you play, the way you mix and interaction with that crowd.
Modern technology is paving the way within the industry, what is your best bit of kit and are you gadget minded?
My favourite bit must be my G5! There’s no joy in dance music without a very power full computer these days. I’m not really gadget minded but I would not mind having my old studio back. Nothing can really beat a stack of hardware.
You’re managed by TEK Management, how did this all start for you? Are you two dedicated teams working together?
We got in touch after I booked one of their djs for an event I was managing and things progressed from there. It’s important that both sides are on the same wavelength.
The old skool principle obviously plays a major part in your life in the industry, what qualities are within this?
It’s all based on a few simple rules really. Besides having talent you need to work hard, earn your place and credits, not be there because of having friends in the right place or some mega PR campaign hyping yet another artist without real substance. Having personality like you find in other parts of the music industry like rock, indie, hip hop and R&B, something where people can relate to the artist as a human being and not a product.
