The No. 1 demon of darkstyle hits London for DHF’s 2nd birthday day bash: interview with FJ Project

Reported by Tara / Submitted 28-09-10 17:53

Luca Cominato aka FJ Project started playing around with Technics decks when he was barely a teenager and soon went on to discover sampling and the awesome acidic power of the Roland 303. He’s since released tracks under several aliases, but it’s his hard trance hat that he’ll be wearing to headline DHF’s 2nd birthday bash @Hidden this Friday night, alongside Scott Attrill, Sam Punk, Luca Antolini and the DHF ressies Nick the Kid vs Louk, Wragg & Log:One, Shock:Force and Dirty Demons Nutty T and Candyman01. The countdown to the party started weeks ago and now with just a couple of days to go, we’ve saved the darkest of the DHF interviews til last...

First of all where does the artist name FJ come from?

The first time I went to a record label, with my first hard trance record created in my very first studio (Suntracker), I found myself face to face with the producer/owner at the time of Hitland and soon after I had to compile the label copy. A quick glance to the sky and then to that mountain of records… I wanted once for all the freedom to express myself and my music FREE… F J… JAY FREE JAY.

I signed my first solo artist project as FJ Project at the time a real success supported by Dana, Gary D, Zany etc…

You started 12 years to get into Technics Turntables, how did this happen and what were you playing then?

I remember those two decks and that legendary Roland DJ 70 and the weird lights flashing controlled by my brother (Max One — producer of tech trance these days). Every day I was there to check what was going on between records and mixes. When Max One left the desk to go out for various reasons, the console became available to me and I was using the old techno/dance successes such as ‘Pump Up The Volume’, ‘James Brown Is Dead’ and the legendary ‘Poing’!

You’ve been DJing and producing for a long time now and are one of the lucky few to make a living from it. Did you always know music was something you were going to do with your life, or did you just fall into it over time?

Yes I am DJ and producer but my takings and earnings are low, the nights are only a few… pirating is destroying the artists, I think that still today it is hard to reach great success with it. I think that with our genre of music there is never incredible success that comes with it. It’s an alternative world and very underground.

If you weren’t a DJ and producer, what do you think you might have done instead?

At the end of the day I am a creative person, I don’t know what to answer here hehehe I would have never existed…hehehe.

You’re known as the founder of darkstyle. What does that involve? Are you naturally a dark person?

Thanks for this massive compliment. In reality I haven’t created the style dark, I only tried to mix and introduce new sounds something between tech and hard music all in a dark key.
Yeah my personality is very dark, like the riffs I have in my music and I can’t stand bright colours even in clothing. A true hard trancer.

You do a radio show every Monday night at 8pm — that must be hard when you’ve had a big weekend! Do you find it hard to collect new material every week, or is there always too much to whittle down?

Yes, the radio show is on DI.FM and requires a lot of work like choosing all the promos I get and mix them and many times I get a little behind, sometimes I need to play the same sets. It doesn’t happen very often but sometimes you just got to do a re-run!!!! Hehehe.
Lately I really feel hard trance, but there are only a few records which properly catch me… they all sound very the same!!! So some advice to all producers, break the boundaries with creativity.

You run three labels: Darksquad, Trance National and Acid Records. What inspired you to set them up and what is the philosophy behind each?

Being a creative person and a DJ/producer at the same time, I had to create three different musical situations from the hard and trancy wave. This is where it all came from. The time dedicated to my next releases I will leave to my inspiration.

What have been the highlights of your career so far? And what goals do you have for the future?

Lately my great success is ‘Heartbreaker’, I think there are many others. n the near future I would like to take my career forward both in music and gigging, which give me that drive in the studio and I would like to define once for all my gigaloops.com project, my new site dedicated to loop samples and sound banks for DJs and producers.

Who or what has influenced your music the most over the years?

I was really hoping not to find this question! The numerous sad love stories made me close myself in my creativity! Hey people please do not use me as an example.

You’ve produced some of the top hard dance tracks, including ‘Kick My Brain’, ‘Acid Storm’, ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘Ex Pulse’ which have it onto some awesome compilations like Steve Hill’s ‘Hard Dance Icons 001’, ‘Goodgreef Xtra Hard’, ‘Kiddst☮ck The Album - The Sound Of Kiddstock’, ‘Kiddfectious’ and ‘Euphoria: Hard Dance Awards 2010’. Which would you say is the dirtiest, hardest and fastest out of all of these, or do you love all of your children equally?

I think they are all pretty good…we are only a few and the genre is really underground and small, so let’s remain all together.

‘Acid Storm’, ‘Acid and Love’, ‘Acid 309’, ‘Acid Storm’… there’s a bit of a theme going on there! Would you say the 303 is a big part of your life?

Acid from the past and acid for the future it has always been my motto. Yeah the Roland 303 is always with me, it’s the height of relaxation for me, such a small kit or hardware but so powerful, this machine has influenced all of my production career!! Thanks Roland.

You’re one of the main producers for Kickin’ Tunes. What set up are you using in the studio at the moment? Do you have a favourite plug in right now?

The setup of the new studio Ultraphonic is really big. I’ve got a lot of hardware, synths, dynamic processors and plug ins. A real studio in every aspect.

If you had an unlimited budget and could put a dance music event on anywhere in the world, where would it be and who would you book to play?

I would organize it in Italy. There has never been anything like it here, portraying this genre, a lot of people don’t even know it for starters. I would call all the DJs and producers who have supported me along all the years… hehehehe.

Doing a weekly radio show, running three labels and DJing, you’re exposed to some of the best dance music around. What DJs and producers have impressed you recently?

Lately who has caught my attention is Frank Ellrich aka A.S.Y.S. but also Sander Van Doorn. The track I really love these days is ‘Klic Klac’ by A.S.Y.S.

You’re coming to London for DHF’s 2nd birthday bash on Friday 1 October, where you playing alongside two other Lucas — Luca Antolini and Luca Falco aka Candyman01 as well as Sam Punk, Scott Attrill and DHF residents Nick the Kid vs Louk, Wragg & Logg:one and Nutty T, who’s half of Dirty Demons with Luca Falco. What can your UK fans expect from your set? Will you plan in advance what you’re going to play or wait and see what the crowd likes on the night?

A bit of dark style, going from hard trance to hardstyle. I always take all my CDs with me. I never prepare my sets and I never know what to play before hand, real DJ style.

Is there anything else you’re going to check out in London while you’re here?

I hope I will meet a fit and beautiful English girl, who knows! I really hope to have a good time with all the DJs and the staff from DHF.

Finally, if one of your fans sees you at the bar next Friday, what should they get you?
Becks, always!

Many thanks Luca and looking forward to seeing you next week!
