A long overdue catch up with JourneyOM ahead of his next Tribal Village party this Friday 14th January 2022 at the Steelyard, London!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 10-01-22 08:15

JourneyOM has been a prominent name in the Psychedelic Trance Scene for decades! In fact, Jay aka Giampero Mastino is one of the original Psy-trance pioneers! He has rocked the global dancefloors of every self-respecting party and festival, produced killer anthems under a few different guises, runs the highly successful legendary label Free-Spirit Records and keeps the London party scene alive with his Tribal Village events. We decided a catch up with this Jack of all Trades was well overdue and with the next instalment of his infamous party just around the corner on the 14th January 2022 now is THE time!

So, Jay, tell us a bit about your origins and the early childhood that shaped you

All my family are from an Italian island called Sardinia and I was born in Milan. So, my education was split between in Sardinia and Milan. My grandfather Giulio is the one that shaped me by giving me the biggest values of life.

What is your earliest memory of music?

My Dad used to play ‘San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)' by Scott McKenzie over and over again. I was around 3 years old and I still remember it.

When and how did you discover psytrance? Talk us through your journey to becoming an artist?

1998! My cousin invited me to go to London to have a break from personal stuff happening back in Italy. I arrived on a Friday and we went to his place which was shared with some other people. One of his flatmates, Robert, invited me to go to a rave around the corner where he was working as a bouncer. The place was called Tyssen Street Studios in Hackney, London. I accepted the offer and went by myself. In the queue I met three Italian guys (Teo, Oscar and Fabry). They were part of a big group of friends from everywhere around the world - Japan, Portugal, Brazil, Australia, South Africa etc. ... they introduced me to every one of them and we all had a blasting party together. At the afterparty at Fabry’s house, I discovered most of them were DJs and producers … I fell in love instantly and the rest is history… I've never left London since then. Beautiful memories <3

What have been your biggest life lessons?

Life itself Big grin

You used to release under multiple names but you merged them under JourneyOM. How would you describe the sound of JourneyOM?

Psychedelic, passionate, unexpected and unique.

Tell us about your act KEEWL…

KEEWL is the duo created by two people - Cylon (Takeo Namiji) and myself. We were in Sapporo, Japan, slightly drunk and listening to the radio. A DJ kept on saying Keewl at the end of any sentence… We decided to make sounds together as a project and called ourselves KEEWL. What an amazing combination! I love the music we do together, it is like we are able to read each other’s minds.

Tell us about your project OMTheory…..

OMTheory is a new project created by Marcello Baccheschi (aka M-Theory, DMTheory and Cimi )and myself (as JourneyOM). We have been making music together since forever and we have played together loads. Phantasm Records were interested in our sounds and we both decided to make the duo a project for a well-known record label. We are currently remixing an Eskimo bomb from the past called ‘Take A Look Out There’ and have already released one track on Phantasm. It’s nice, fun and inspiring!

You are head honcho for the legendary Free-Spirit Records. What’s the secret to such a successful label and has the label changed over the years and what has remained constant?

No secrets at all! I love music and I run Free-Spirit following my instincts regarding that. So, genres are quite various on the label. Chillout, downtempo, progressive, psytrance, psychedelic, etc. Free-Spirit Records has opened doors and given a platform to many unknown and raw artists and it has been a magnet for many of them. Lots of psychedelic trance festival stars playing everywhere in the world have passed by Free-Spirit and then perhaps found their path with other labels. I am very proud of all of them! It is constant because I've worked and worked hard for it… I never, ever give up.

You also run the hugely loved and successful Tribal Village parties. What’s the essence of these parties? Tell us about the next event…

The essence is ‘us’ merging together in a place where we can meet old friends again and make new ones, sharing our past and current experiences and getting visions of the new ventures to come. The next event will be indoors on the 14th of January in London at The Steel Yard, and then we have a 4-day outdoor event in Kent, at an amazing location called Colebrook Park in Tunbridge Wells.

You also run Killah Mastering Studios. What disciplines are required to master successfully, as opposed to production and mixing?

I did a course in sound engineering and music technology at IMW in London where I learned the discipline and the differences between them. Music production, mixing and mastering are connected but they all are single entities. Knowledge and practice are paramount; there are no shortcuts.

Tell us about your exciting remix for Perfect Stranger?

Yuli and I met properly some years ago in a festival in Turkey… He told me he used to play my tracks back in the day; I felt very flattered by this and spoke to him about merging all my solo acts into one name. I said I would love to remix ‘Six Feet Under’ for my new upcoming album 'The Genesis of Story Tunes'. I am super excited, especially after his great comments about the two versions I did for the album. Also, I'm currently doing a remix of the same track for another one of my collaboration projects with Steve Morley, Sonic Wave Control. It’s gonna blast!

You’re currently working on 2 mammoth albums. Tell us about them…

I am working on my first album under the name JourneyOM - ‘The Genesis of Story Tunes’ already mentioned above. Also, after a ten-year break, Steve Morley and I are back making Sonic Wave Control sounds; we are doing a remix of our successful album ‘Sixth Sense’ - it will be called ‘Sixth Sense Ten Years After’. I am very excited about it and very happy we have reunited after such a long time.

What are your biggest drivers and motivators in life?

Never ever, ever give up. Always daring to dream and going through unknown paths and adventures is so beautiful.

What are your hopes, dreams and plans for the future?

Hopes - all will be ok
Dreams - pursuing them
Plans - no plans. I am following the flow and trusting the process

What is your life mantra?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.

Thank you so much for your interview Jessica, I had lots of good flashback memories.

To hear JourneyOM play with his various double acts head to Tribal Village at the Steelyard, London on Friday 14th January 2022, from 22:00-0600.
