An audience with Paul Maddox

Reported by Wiggii / Submitted 10-11-05 15:40

A boy wonder. A multi-talented artist & producer. A tidy prince. A legend in the making. I give you Mr Paul Maddox. Practically a household name amongst djs and producers alike, Paul is undoubtably admired for reaching the stage he is at in his career at such a young age. From his late teens, he has been churning out quality musical masterpieces, building on each one to get to that all important next level. From trance to techno, from psy trance to hard house, he has tried his hand at them all and on every occasion an anomalous track has been born.

We catch up with Paul Maddox as he prepares to play this Friday 11th Nov at BASIC for a London Exclusive back 2 back first, with his good friend and fellow tidy prince, Guyver.

For the record who are you and where do you come from?

I’m Paul and originally from Chesterfield, currently residing in Sheffield.

You started off your career as a producer at quite a young age by remixing ‘Set You Free’ by N-Trance. This was immediately signed by tidy and things have been on the up ever since. What was it about ‘Set You Free’ that distinguished it from all the rest and made you want to remix it?

Well I had the acapella on the CD single for a start! Other than that I just really like the tune.

You have mentioned previously that BK, Paul Van Dyk, Ingo and Colin Barratt are producers that inspire you the most! What do these select few have that other producers don’t?

BK and van Dyk are in my eyes at the top of their game production-wise. Ingo & Colin are guys I’ve learned a lot from working with.

You produced ‘Sunset’ under your alias Azure a while back. This track was a piece of musical wizardry being aired on Radio 1 and being the track that all djs would play during their sets. How did it make you feel knowing that one of your remixes was receiving such wide acclaim and notoriety?

Fantastic! When I had the idea to bootleg ‘Sound of Violence’ in the first place I realised it could be a bit special, but never thought I would have the success it eventually did.

You have played as all over the world and alongside some of the biggest artists on the dance scene. What event would you say was most memorable and what country was it in?

It’s impossible to say just one, but I recently played a big outdoor gig in Russia which was excellent and obviously the big Tidy events over here are always top notch as well.

On the 11th November you will be playing back to back with Guyver at an event that is making waves in that it is a promotion that is going against the norm and bringing fresh ideas and innovative line-ups to London’s dance scene. Have you heard anything about this event and are you looking forward to your debut?

Yeah, heard a few good things about Basic, and always enjoy playing at the Fridge so it should be a good fun!

Guyver has played at Basic alongside Lee Haslam under their guise Euphony back in September at The Autumn Ball. Has he told you what to expect at this event?

I’ve not actually spoken to him about it. But we need to get out heads together this week to sort out what kind of stuff we’re going to be playing so I’m sure he’ll fill me in.

I have heard through the grape vine that you are trying your hand at psy trance and a little leftfield. Is this just you branching out into other genres or are you a little tired of the harder stuff?

A bit of both really, I’ve been spending more time working on house stuff and even some almost pop material with a vocalist friend of mine recently. Mainly just to keep things fresh — working on the same sort of music all the time can really stifle creativity without a bit of a change every so often.

You use Ableton Live for the majority of your producing correct? Why do you use this over other software such as Logic or Cubase? Could you expand a little on this for all of us who are not too familiar with production software?

I actually only use Ableton for my live PAs — just because it is so stable and flexible in a live situation — the ability to drop things in and out in real-time without missing a beat. Cubase SX is my main production software though.

You are accumulating quite a number of aliases. Can you tell us a bit more about Olive Grooves and what to expect?

Olive Grooves is a project I’m working on to go back to hard house’s roots a bit. The music seems to have reached a bit of a dead end at the moment, so Olive Grooves is all about dropping the tempo and getting some funk back into the equation.

In no more than ten words, tell us why you think people should come down and see you play at Basic on the 11th Nov.

London Exclusive! Maddox b2b Guyver! What more could you ask for!

Something Old.

K_Series returns. After his show stopping performance at The Autumn Ball, the many faces of Jon Langford return in his K_Series alter ego. Retrofitting those anthems of a by-gone
era with a modern day edge, his show is a hypnotic trip down those winding memory lanes.

Something New.

Greg Brookman is the name on everyone’s lips. One of, if not the most exciting producer in Hard Dance, he is making the big guns take a nervous look over their shoulder as he quickly eats
into their comfort zone! Expect unique, one off remixes & solo productions on a backdrop of driving Hard Trance from 2005’s ‘one to watch’.

Something Borrowed.

Mark Sinclair is an underground Hard Trance legend. Pioneer of the UK Hard Trance phenomenon he has been asking crowds to raise their hands in the air for more years than even he can remember! Founder and Promoter of the mighty Pendragon parties, he is lending his services to Basic for one night only for an exclusive ‘Classic Pendragon’ set!

2TRANCE

After legendary performances at the last 2 Basic’s from K.A.R.L. & Latex Zebra, its time for another London hero to take commend of the 2Trance Arena. Simon Rutherford has been a corner stone of the London Underground scene for more years than we can remember. Having been on a musical journey these past 2years ‘S. Rutherford Version.2.0’ has redefined his sound and re-emerged as a more complete DJ/Producer. It’s with great pride and much excitement that we hand the keys to 2Trance to him for a World Exclusive 3 Hour set!
