Tasty 2 - The Valentine's Love Dance - Review Reported by billy boy / Submitted 20-02-02 00:37 We had been looking forward to Tasty 2 with a lot of anticipation. We caught the closing phases of the inaugural Tasty early in November last year. The party was absolutely rammed full and though we heard varying reports on the quality of the music, the atmosphere and the feel-good vibe was excellent and we were left feeling keen for more. Due to prior commitments, we missed Steve Hill’s set and only piled into Crash in time to catch the closing tunes of Alan Thompson in the main room. Billy ‘Daniel’ Bunter & Justin Bourne came on B2B at 1am and this is when the party really kicked off for us. What followed was a non-stop party set incorporating a pile of the top hard dance anthems of the past few months. It really was one of the best sets I’ve heard this year. We knew we were really in trouble when they slapped on ‘Dreams’ (Miss Shiva / Paul Glazby remix) and we hadn’t had a chance to catch our breath from ‘Khemikal Imbalance’ (BK / Andy Farley) a few moment’s earlier. Luckily we had managed to stake out a prime patch of dance floor below the DJ box and were able to cut loose with our full repertoire of leaps, bounds, ear-to-ear grins and arm flailing manoeuvres (Conan – eat your heart out !) We plunged across to Room 2 a couple of times before 2.30am and Tony Price has proceedings well in hand with a selection of hard trance classics appropriate to the theme of the room that night. As such, we found ourselves confronted by one of those ultimate clubbing dilemmas – the music was so good in each room, where were we going to stay and dance In the end, we opted for the Room 1 Bunter-Bourne Carnage-Combo. One of the first things we had noticed on entering Crash was the exceptional laser display – they had a beast of a laser hooked up and were really putting it through its paces, including firing it off a huge disco ball in the centre of the room. There was also a bubble machine working on overdrive which combined with the lasers looked totally brilliant. It looked slightly less brilliant when the bubbles started popping in my eyes – they stung like fu.., umm… they stung a lot However, after I moved out of the direct path the fans were blowing them in and put my protective goggles on I was OK again. Jon Doe and Mark EG were behind the decks next and what happened was a little unexpected. The music style took a distinctly darker, harder tone with some truly pounding bass lines. Jon Doe has produced several of the most outstanding tunes of recent years. His ‘Warehouse’ is a personal all time top ten favourite of mine (and recently voted 3rd best tune of 2001 in the EnergyUK Poll). As such, we were kind of expecting some hard but euphoric anthems to be pounded out. However, the contrast of the set he launched into with Mark EG compared to what had just preceded was a bit of a shock to the system – the bass was massively heavy. We stayed for a while and every now and then they did drop in a more uplifting number. The crowd on the dance floor did seem to be thinning out though, and in search of something a little more energetic, we also headed back to Room 2 to see what was going on… Changing rooms turned out to be an inspired move – Room 2 was rammed full and Spencer Freeland and Dean Peters were serving up a totally awesome B2B set of classic hard house and hard trance anthems, beaming out from the DJ booth all the while. Matt Clarke and Steve Blake came on next and proceeded to absolutely tear the dance floor to pieces !! The crowd was bouncing, arms were in the air and the atmosphere was totally upbeat. It was almost like being back at Convergence in the same venue two years ago – ‘Classics’ was the theme of Room 2 and these were both classic sets. They let rip into us with a whole box full of hard trance classics, amongst which were Parker & Clind’s ‘Generator’ and ‘Area’ by Sounds of Barcelona (one of Matt’s top three of all time – see harderfaster’s interview with Matt here). Overall, it was a pretty much faultless three hours of hard trance that wouldn’t have been out of place in the Main Room at Camden Palace during Timeless. We had a blast ! As per the last Tasty, a generous bonus was having smiley people wondering about the club handing out melon slices, orange pieces and icy poles – apparently they were even handing out lollipops on the door earlier ! This kind of thing must cost tupence but it is mightily appreciated by dehydrated clubbers at five o’clock in the morning still facing another two hours of hard thrashing dancing. We approved. Having been “trapped” in Room 2 by the quality of the music, we managed to miss Karim altogether… However, come 5.30pm, Simon Eve and Dynamic Intervention took charge of Room 2. Accompanying them was initially a slight downward change of pace from the proceeding two sets and as I knew that Roosta was playing B2B with Skol next door, it was time to shift rooms once again. These boys know what they are doing when it comes to hard dance music, and though my recollection is a little hazy (possibly due to a combination of exhaustion and sleep deprivation etc…) from what I do recall, they kept the crowd dancing with a well chosen mix of hard and energetic tunes. Whilst it was good of Tasty to stay open until 7am, not everyone chose to take advantage of the extra hour and by 6.15am the crowd had thinned noticeably. This was a class night of hard dance clubbing, with the sets of Billy ‘Daniel Bunter B2B Justin Bourne, Dean Peters B2B Spencer Freeland and Matt Clarke B2B Steve Blake being as good as anything I’ve heard this year. Tasty 3 has just been announced for Friday March 22nd at Mass and promising B2B sets from Roosta & Steve Hill, Karim & Dave Randall, Phil Reynolds & Nick Sentience, Skol & Matt Clarke and Billy Daniel Bunter & Jon Doe plus Lee James (Live P.A), it looks a bit too good to go past. The only problem is that Mainframe is on the following night up at Milton Keynes… Oh well, I guess that’s a nice problem to have !! I did think at the time that you would have loved that Doe/EG set TearZ ! But then that was one of the good things about Tasty, quality and different music options in both rooms at all times.
