The Gallery at Turnmills: Reviewed

The lure of Mauro Picotto, Marco V and Matt Hardwick at The Gallery on the 16th of March was too strong to resist this month, despite saving up for house buying and all that malarkey, so a couple of Fridays ago saw yours truly and the faithful clubbing companion rock up… once again… at Turnmills, EC1, London, UK… the World. I go there so often it‘s actually getting embarrassing, although with the advent of summer and some developments in clubland, Farringdon may be seeing me a bit less often in the next few months.
Bugger all queue outside at 12.30, which was surprising considering the constellation of big names booked for the shiny new see-through DJ booth inside. The warm-up set from Welsh lad Gareth Emery was excellent, really rocky and sternum-vibrating, and with bags of gritty electro energy. Loads of funk and loads of cool vocals - the boy from the valleys done well. If I’m honest I don’t even know if he really is Welsh… I just like saying it.
Mauro Picotto
A massive cheer greeted Mauro Picotto’s first track, along with chants of ‘Mauro Mauro’, and he launched in with a colossal techy bassline to the accompaniment of crowd roar. His set featured some grindingly large and sparse breakdowns and managed to be surprisingly dancey for the most part, despite being largely reliant on kick and bass.
Marco V
Marco V kicked off with a proper funky little minx of a track and continued in a slowish, electro vein. There was some super breaksy sexy stuff as well, but in all honesty, it all felt a bit lacking in the trance department. I've seen Marco play some colossal driving sets and this brings me neatly to something debated in the forums recently (by me, anyway). Do you ever really get ‘proper’, honest to goodness trance in the main room at Turnmills? My considered opinion is no and I expect a deluge of scorn for it, so fire away. Don’t get me wrong – I love The Gallery and I’ve had many, many good times dancing like an eejit in there, as you’re all aware, but The Gallery caters for more than just trance fans. Even trance-tastic Matt Hardwick did not quite hit the euphoric heights we know and love.
What’s being played instead? Well it varies, but a slightly slower, more electro sound, even from diehard trance DJs. Judge Jules practically played house the last time we saw him play there, although to be fair he’s never exactly been a purveyor of 142 bpm ultra-euphoria. The exception, of course, is Vaccine, although for the most part they do rule the backroom. More of that later.
Matt Hardwick
Atmosphere wise it was pleasant enough, although not as busy as you’d expect considering the weight of the lineup. At one point we did see six burly coppers come rumbling in and down to the office so there was clearly some shenanigans on the go. Ghoulish questioning of the staff elicited nowt. Damn.
Knowing less than nothing about house, I sent my secret Turnmills spy into T2 to get the lowdown. According to them, the room started a little slowly but when the Hungarians Belocca & Soneec (UK debute) took over they quickly had the room in full swing. Tania von Pear came on at 4am to a slightly waning crowd and showed why she has the accolade of Gallery resident, keeping those left glued to the dance floor. Props to my undercover house fiend for their help, and expect more from them on other occasions.
There's bags of good stuff coming up though in London. Peach returned for a fantastic, one-off rave-up at Heaven (expect a review coming shortly), and the big news is... following a summer event Peach will be back weekly - giving the London trance scene a much needed shot in the arm. The Bank Holiday weekend sees the ever-popular Knowwhere and Alex MORPH back at Heaven and then the following weekend it's the monthly installment of Vaccine at The Gallery. John 00 Fleming, Mike Koglin and Sander van Doorn in the main room and (blatant favouritism this) my talented buddy Ricky D ending proceedings in the Vaccine room. See you… as ever… down the front.
