With the music still ringing in our ears from the marathon Together NYE session with 2manydjs, Mylo, Simian Mobile Disco and co, Together regroups at Turnmills on the first Saturday of 2008 (5 Jan) for more of the same and an exclusive Free Members Party. Rather than sitting around moping about the gloomy weather or probable hangover... Together presents a unique event to kick off the New Year in style, as we collaborate with our fave London promoters, our DJs tips for 2008 and an exciting new artist who’s caught our eye!! With Together normally residing on the last Saturday of the month... we couldn’t resist the temptation of throwing down another multi-room mash-up in between, and showcasing an event which we feel is one of the exciting Together line-ups we’ve ever curated; at a price to suit even the most strap-for-cash raver!!
Up in the main room then, where we welcome an influx of talented new souls to the floor, alongside the hotly-tipped Streetlife DJs – our new Together residents for 2008. With fellow ressies Justin Robertson, Anil Chawla and John Kennedy taking a well earned rest before the big 2nd Birthday at the end of the month (Sat 26 Jan), the Streetlife DJs step up to the table for their main room debut and the mouth-watering prospect of us lot bopping away to the type of rule-less set, which has seen comparisons between them and kings of the mega-mix, 2manydjs. Guest-wise, we’ve recruited 4 DJ/Producers who are set to dominate the electronic scene in 2008. Step forward European rockers Yuksek and D.I.M, plus home-grown talents Alex Metric and Tronik Youth. The classically trained Yuksek is part of the new wave of French artists to emerge, post Ed Banger. Signed to Headman’s Relish Records, the Frenchman is fast becoming one of the most exciting new artists out there. His ‘Composer’ EP was a big fave with the heavyweights and he’s since remixed a number of artists including Shitdisco, Klangage, Das Pop and Adam Kesher. Next up is German talent D.I.M who’s already blowing-up big time. His bass-heavy sound has attracted the attention of Turbo Records head honcho Tiga, Boys Noize and his Boys Noize label, plus Aussie ravers Modular. The release of ‘Airbus Baby’ gained heavy support from Erol, MSTRKRFT, Justice and alike and with tracks like this glitchy monster under his belt already and huge hype across the board, the one like D.I.M is set to become one of the leading new names for the year ahead. So we’ve seen what Europe has to offer; now it’s the turn of the UK bods flying the flag for new music. Alex Metric had made a big splash in 2007 as both a DJ and Producer. His debut EP ‘Whatshewants’ was released on Adam Freeland’s cult label Marine Parade and received support from a diverse bunch of big guns including Laurent Garnier, M.A.N.D.Y, Meat Katie and James Zabiela. He’s since been asked to co-produce Adam Freeland’s up-and-coming album and has remixed the likes of GusGus and Sharam Jey. Alex’s sets are renowned for their big room bass n’ beats... so perfect for the underground layers of Turnmills’ main room den. Last but by no means least are Tronik Youth. Describing their sound as “Patrick Cowley fighting the Sex Pistols”, the Tronik Youth guys have no shortage of fans, with notable remixes for The Gossip (Standing in the Way of Control), Goose, Franz & Shape and The Rakes doing some damage this year and plenty more on the way in 2008 with re-rubs for the likes Late of the Pier, New Young Pony Club and Headman amongst many others. Together has been all over their own ‘We Are’ single too, so make sure you get down extra early to catch the boys in action.
Over in T2, Together hands over the baton to the baile funk of Zombie Disco Squad’s Get Rude party and Hannah Holland’s booty-house-lovin’ Bastard Batty Bass, who team up for a filthy, bass-driven night of electro with very special guests Radioclit, plus regulars Mama Shamone, Jpeg and MC Chickaboo aka ‘the UK’s No.1 Female MC’. Shoreditch session Get Rude is the place to be if you wanna hear the sounds of Brazil’s back streets, mixed up with all things Baltimore rave and ghettotech. Lead by Zombie Disco Squad, expect maximum rude-ness!! Bastard Batty Bass meanwhile is the brainchild of Trailer Trash’s Hannah Holland and co-hort Mama Shamone. As Hannah puts it, “Batty bass refers to music that makes your hips and ass move: anything with a filthy bassline, and Mama Shamone’s always saying bastard (!), so that’s the name in a nutshell.” Splendid. Basically, music to feel-it-in-your-pants!! Special guests Radioclit are the perfect headline act and part of this new worldwide revolution that includes artists like Switch, Sinden, Diplo, M.I.A, Buraka Som Sistema and Bonde Do Role. Check their ‘Divine Gosa’ EP on Switch/Sinden’s Countrefeet label and the M.I.A/Santagold collab ‘Get it up’. Heavy.
Finally upstairs in Topfloor, Together goes wild n’ crazy as London scenesters Adventures Close to Home join in the fun with another hot to trot line-up of future darlings. ACTH are one of the most respected promoters in this fair city and their residency at the Barfly is as legendary as the live acts they’ve book before they hit the big time… CSS (debut London show), Justice, Gossip, Spank Rock, Death From Above 1979, Cut Copy, Maximo Park, The Futureheads, Midnight Juggernauts, Chromeo, The Presets, The Rakes and Jack Penate, to name err, 13 of their hot picks! As DJs, ACTH play all over the gaff from festivals like Tales of the Jackalope and the Great Escape to happening happenings like VICE, Modular and DFA parties and the Camden Crawl. For their debut Together outing, ACTH draw upon the sounds of 8bit scene pioneer David E. Sugar, plus party starter Disko Boxx and blogger dood Headphone Sex.
It’s not only the dancefloor that Together has a passion for. Artistic design has always been the creative force behind our nights and this month we’ve sourced the talents of new illustrator Luke James to provide the art behind the beats. Check his work here: www.myspace.com/godejong
