If this article is anything to go by, signing a contract with Cowell is the worst thing you could do...

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

The way most big record labels work is that once you sign to them they kind of own you.

They invest a lot of money in you in the form of video, studio, image, marketing etc costs. Then they want their money back with lots of interest. So as soon as you sign a deal you're in a lot of debt to the company. To repay the debt they will take most of the profit from everything from album and singles sales, concerts, merchandise and basically everything you do and you'll get a small salary so you can afford to live.

If you start writing your own material and are very successful then you can do well, makes lots of money and start having some power with the record label. However if you don't sell millions of records you basically remain in debt to them.

This is why George Michael famously wanted out of his Sony deal. He didn't want his life to be owned by them anymore.

The truth is that if you want to be successful you probably need to have a major record label behind you investing in you, however it's not probably as cool as glamourous as the media makes it appear.
