So, with a 2nd birthday now under their belts and a boat party coming up, things seem to be going from strength to strength for the Electronic Sessions crew. If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket then it’s all aboard this Saturday, just make sure you have your boarding pass, sailor’s hat and you’ve read the following interview with ES Resident Lizzie Curious.
Hey Lizzie! It’s been a year since we last caught up with you. 2007 was a big year for you, both on the DJing front and with your productions, singing and songwriting, including the release of your new album! We hardly know where to start with this interview! But seeing as we have just programmed you in for a peak time set on our boat party, let’s start with the DJing.
There’s no denying you always have a big impact on the dancefloor when you play and you receive plenty of positive comments after your sets. So how would you define your “Lizzie Curious” sound and what can people expect from your set on Saturday?
The Lizzie Curious sound is all about dirty, yet uplifting house and electro for me. But the tracks I play have to have a strong melodic element too, plus have that superphat bassline. You can expect a good proportion of hands in the air moments where you might want to sing your heart out, interspersed with those juicy basslines that make you pull that scrunched up face and have a good old stomp! Producers really hitting the mark with me at the moment include Miles Dyson, Blende, Matthew Dekay, Jack Michaels, Robbie Rivera, Aaren San, Steve Noxx, Stupid Fresh and Twocker.
My sets, I would say, have a huge amount of energy to them, both in the tunes that I play and the way I am behind the decks. I have such a passion for DJing and the music that I get to play. My aim is for everyone on the dancefloor to have the time of their lives. I just can’t help but have a massive smile on my face and really interact with the crowd when I play, I just relish every moment behind the decks and it always goes far too quickly. I view each gig I do as a performance where I’m going to give it nothing less than 100%, so I’ll spend a lot of time beforehand sourcing new material, re-editing tracks and adding acapellas to make it unique. I’ve got 2 brand new tracks to air on Saturday, a remix of 2Kool4Skool (one of the most popular tracks on my album) by Steve Noxx (a fantastic electro producer who is very much in demand) plus my own remix of a Sia track too.
This last year has been your busiest yet on the DJing front, from all your fantastic sets at ElectronicSessions (both on the boat and in the clubs), your album launch at Turnmills, main room, peak-time gigs all over the South West & London and of course a plethora of fantastic gigs with Break Out (your Cheltenham residency) including live vocal PA performances. How is 2008 shaping up for you and what have you got in store?
Well it goes without saying that I am so pleased to be a resident for ElectronicSessions. It is great to be part of such a forward-thinking promotion who always push the boundaries with their line-ups and put such a lot of effort into each and every event. I think this is reflected in the crowd that supports ElectronicSessions, everyone is always friendly and up for it, but there’s a touch of class! The 2nd birthday party in February was such a fantastic night and now with the 5th sell-out boat party in a row I think ’08 is going to be a great year for ES.
My other DJ residency is for Break Out. It’s a club night focussing on filthy cutting edge electro and twisted house that I run with Simon Pisani. We had a fantastic 2007, which included my album launch party at The Gallery at Turnmills, a Break Out night in Ibiza at the exclusive Es Vive hotel and a host of events all around Cheltenham (including hosting rooms for Gatecrasher & Cream). We have just moved to an amazing, new 600 capacity club in Cheltenham called Dakota and we will be celebrating our 2nd birthday in style on 18th April, followed by monthly events thereafter. It’s really great because a lot of our Break Out crowd are also devout ElectronicSessions supporters and vice versa and a lot of friendships have been forged from these two nights! We ran a successful ElectronicSessions meets Break Out in Cheltenham last year and are hoping to do more of the same in both Cheltenham and London later on this year.
On top of ElectronicSessions and Break Out, I’m busy playing around the South West for nights such as Elektrophonik (Swindon), Tribal Medicine (Brighton), Cut The Mustard (2XS), Grin Recordings (Inigo). Check out the gig guide on my HarderFaster DJ page or on my website for my full diary.
So, moving onto your songwriting, singing and production. You’ve released your own album Different Things, what has the response been so far?
I have been blown away by the positive feedback I’ve received. Not only have I had support from producers that I really admire, but have so many emails, texts and messages from people from all walks of life all around the world! When people I’ve never even met get in touch to say they love my music – that means so much. I was surprised at the amount of people who knew me as a DJ but didn’t know that I sang and produced as well - so I’m really glad I have got the album out there.
How would you describe the music on your album?
Well a lot of people have been surprised when they listen to the album that it’s more than just dance music. In fact there is a whole range of music on there, from chill-out to tech trance. It’s a fusion of house music, catchy electro-pop, tech trance and even some beautiful, evocative chillout. Imagine a party with Groove Armada, Moloko, Lamb & Morcheeba behind the decks, then add vocals that sound a bit like Kylie or Dido or Lily Allen, with catchy lyrics and that’s kinda how my album sounds. (By the way, all those artists I just listed are comparisons that other people have made to my music!)

So what else have you been up to in the world of singing and songwriting?
Probably my biggest success to date is that I have a vocal coming out on Robbie Rivera’s new album called Star Quality. I’ve always been a big fan of Robbie’s work so to have a vocal on his new production album is a massive achievement for me. The vocal is me at my sleaziest and the backing is a very tough, dirty and perfect for peak-time house sets. An extra little bit of kudos for me is that Robbie has actually named his album Star Quality too! Watch this space for the release date of the album which is set for worldwide release on Robbie’s Juicy Music Label.
I have also joined Powder Room Productions as one of their featured artists. For my first EP (due out in May), they are re-releasing one of the most popular tracks from my album I’m Not Drowning with remixes from Leisuregroove, Darren Rhys and Laura Brown. I’ve also written and sung a vocal for Tim Davison, which he has used on his forthcoming debut artist album which is set for release on Baroque Records. I’m also going to be hooking up with Jack Michaels from Grin Recordings in May so watch out for a killer track!
You entered the UK Songwriting Contest for the first time in 2007, with 3 tracks reaching the finals, putting you in the top 6% of all 5,000 entries. Where do you get your inspiration to write songs from?
It depends really but generally it tends to be everyday situations that inspire me. Someone might just say a sentence in passing, or I might see something that bring backs a memory. Sometimes I mainly focus on a state of mind or a particular emotion, other times I’ll tell a whole story over the course of the song. Sometimes I put myself in someone else’s shoes to write the track (as in writing it from someone else’s perspective), other times I’m writing about something that I have experienced myself. I don’t have a set structure to the way I write, in fact a lot of the time I will just be walking around and a song will pretty much pop into my head. So I’ll sing it to myself down the phone (ignoring the slightly worried looks from passers-by) and race back to my studio to get it all down!
Well it seems as ever you are keeping really busy Ms Curious, when you get time to relax what do you like doing?
I love watching films on the big screen to get that full experience of the film - the cinematography, the film score - and I always make sure that I am there in time to catch the previews! I also just really like hanging out with family and friends, eating good food, going for walks, the usual! However I have also just started to get into plants in a big way. Suddenly my house has become filled with them and every time I go shopping I have this desire to buy another plant! I blame Ross & Greg (the ElectronicSessions promoters) for this as they bought me a bonsai tree for my birthday and amazingly it’s still alive and looking really healthy, so I think this has inspired me to become a bit more green-fingered!
