All sorts of Antix at Glade

Antix consists of brothers Barton and Hayden Strom, who have been partners both in the studio and when performing under aliases: Antix, Fiord and Triangle. With one of their cornerstone upcoming gigs being the awesome Glade 2011, I decided to find out a bit more about these guys . . .
Firstly, when did you start getting into electronic music and what led you to this?
We discovered electronic music back in the late Nineties. I think the first Electronic album we shared was the Orb’s, UFOrb. It was a totally new sound and it held so much mystery. This lead us on to Artists like X dream, Pledians & the Green nuns of the revolution to name a few. This music was totally out of this world and we were fascinated by it. It didn’t take long until we were hooked!
How soon was it until you started wanting to produce yourselves? Were you musical children?
Neither of us were musical as kids really. We loved music but had not learned to play any instruments. We were drawn to Electronic music production back in 1997 when we were both living in Japan. We had the opportunity to experience some killer parties and hear some amazing music while we were there. Japan as we know is the Mecca for electronics so it was there where it all started, where we brought our first bit of studio equipment. MC303, Nord lead 1, Novation Bass station, Mackie mixer and some outboard Reverb & Delay Fx Racks. Our very first Productions were made only with this kit with no computer PC's. All sequenced and recorded Live to DAT tape. Was awesome!
Since we were young we have had a lot in common, with similar interests and tastes in music. Both of us have had various influences on each other over the years, inspiring each other in many ways as brothers do who spend a lot of time together.
How did you learn the skills of production?
Neither of us have any real formal training. Barton had a few Piano lessons when he was a kid. We've learnt all we know as we've gone along the past 10 or so years. It’s been a real hands on learn as you go experience. Both of us have really tuned our ears to know what chords and harmonies work together. Some of our formally trained musician friends have said to us in the past that our chord structures and progressions, in theory should just not work? But for us, if it feels and sounds right then go with it! No rules, no boundaries! That’s our Motto.
You produce under different monikers; how do these styles differ from each other and is there one you favour?
We have a few Projects on the go. The Antix vibe is more of a progressive journey. We try to keep a coherent feel in all our Antix productions with a lot of emotive atmospheres, minor harmonies and crispy rhythmic hooks.
Our Fiord project was developed to give ourselves room to express ourselves musically and experiment with our sound more.
Fiord is designed more for the club in mind it has a Techno/Tech house vibe. Tough beats, driving bass lines and hypnotic grooves. We have no favour over the projects they are both as important as each other. Our other projects are collaborative projects such as “Triangle” which is us and a good mate from NZ. Working with others is important for our musical development and keeps us on our toes so to speak. Makes the process fresh and its very inspiring. Having that extra influence in the studio always brings something pretty special and unique in the music made.
How does it work when you produce together? Do you follow a set routine or plan?
We do have a bit of a formula but no real routine.
Usually I (Hayden) will sit in the drivers seat, programming and laying down the initial base layers of the tracks. Working on the beats, percussion and grooves etc. Barton is more hands on all over the synths constantly jamming finding the hooks and all that. We are both capable of it all but when we are in the studio together we usually take on those roles. This makes the process much more efficient and productive.
We usually always spend an hour or so before each session listening to other music for inspiration and sharing any ideas vocally also.
What are you favourite pieces of equipment in the studio?
Our favourites are the Roland Sh101, Juno 106, Roland 808, Nord lead & the Moog Voyager! All these synth’s are full of so much warmth and create a texture you just can produce with the software.
Who and what are your inspirations when creating a track?
Inspiration comes from so many sources. Most inspiration comes from fresh innovative tracks from all artists we are listening to. We have been getting a lot of Inspire recently from Maceo Plex's new album on Crosstown Rebles label - Sick!
You describe your studio as your ‘creative playground’. What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t producers?
Yeah this music making business just kind of happened with no real planning involved. It was a natural development and it just took over our past carrier paths. Both of us were working as Chefs before music became the focus.
I guess we might have our own business in that industry or working on the hot line for the man. Happy to be where we are for sure!
What are the pros and cons (if any) of being brothers? Is there any sibling rivalry?
Being Brothers allows us to express ourselves fully with no holding back, this is a good thing and only sometimes a bad thing, but we work through things really quickly. No real rivalry. What’s the point? We both play our roles in the production process and we know each others strengths and weaknesses. We have worked out which buttons to press and which ones not too!
You’re from New Zealand, how does the underground dance scene compare with the UK?
New Zealand’s Underground scene is pretty cool. We have lots of open air Mini Festivals and a few clubs around the country are bringing in some top notch acts. The only problem with the scene is sometimes we just don't get enough people attending. I think this comes down to our population size of only 4.5 Million. There are just not enough peeps to fill the clubs out every gig. Its a shame because some promoters just don't bother bringing in the artists as its too much risk finically for them. In saying that there are a few promoters dedicated to the cause and make the events happen no matter what.
Do you feel the underground scene has changed much over the years? If so; in what way?
The underground scene is always changing. It’s a constant evolution. In these later years there are a lot more fusion in the sound and people combine a lot of different genres together. But music generally does big circles on itself, just like fashion things repeat themselves but with a slightly different flavour. The quality of productions get better and better as technology develops also. All I know is that it just keeps getting better!
What has been one of the highlights of your careers so far, and have there been any ‘low-lights’?
It’s all highly lit. The amount of places we have scene in the world through making music is amazing. Places we have traveled and the people we have met along the way have been the major highlights.
If I was to pick one Highlight it would be playing to 40,000 people recently @ Xxperience festival in Brazil alongside Plastikman & Dubfire & Sasha. It was an awesome experience to play to so many people and be on stage in the company of those artist that we have inspired to for so many years.
Most clubs are pretty dark and minimally lit so yeah a lot of low lights.
You’re playing on the Origin stage at Glade 2011. How excited are you?
Yeah very excited to be playing the Origin stage! We closed the origin stage in 2008. This was huge and our set was received so well by the crowd so if its anything like last time then, whoohaa!! I can’t wait!
What can people expect from your set?
This year I'll be presenting tracks LIVE from our latest Album "Cavalier" and a few fresh bombs from our latest stash of goodies!!  All tunes are broken down into key elements - Kick, Bass, Hats, Snares, Atmos, FX and Hooks etc enabling me to remix on the spot with extra FX and twists giving it a real live feel.
Who are you looking forward to hearing at Glade 2011?
I’m looking forward to hearing what Trentemøller will do live this year. Seen him years ago before he blew up so big and his live show then was slick. I’m sure his live show will be off the hook! Also Andy Weatheral will be awesome. His stuff is totally up my ally and very much an inspiration. Slam will be wicked also!
What other plans do you have for the rest of the year?
I’m in Mexico & the States at the moment, then back home to finish off some remixes and get stuck into some originals with Barton, before taking off on the European tour in June. Will be kicking off the tour @ the Glade festival. I’ll be based in Berlin until mid September. The Europe tour is shaping up nicely with gigs set in France, Switzerland, Israel, Slovenia and other cities in Germany. I have also secured a part time residency on a Wednesday night open air club in Berlin. Stoked!
