The Thirsty DJs interview at Gurn.net
(extracted from http://www.gurn.net/html/interviews/thirstydjs.shtml)

The Thirsty DJs have been appearing on the bill of some major nights recently, but who are they and what do they want?

How did the Thirsty DJs come into existence?

Thirsty DJs are basically a collective of DJs who provide excellent house music all night long.

It all came about in the middle of last year when an opportunity came about at the Retox Bar, Covent Garden. I got together a few DJs wanting to play out from their bedrooms and after our first gig, we were offered a monthly residency on the last Thursday of every month and we called it Thirsty Thursday.

Since March this year, we have changed our residency from Retox to the Southside Bar on the last Friday of every month, each one with different themes.

The idea was to get quality up and coming DJs together for a good night out as a warm up for the weekend. We were then regularly offered gigs outside of those two bars, hosting the funky house room of hard dance events, billed as Thirsty DJs.

Describe the Thirsty DJs musical policy.

Our musical policy is mainly uplifting driving jacking house music with the funky edge and some electro, tech, progressive and breaks infusion. We try to pre-programme our nights or sets so no tunes are repeated and have a varied style from start to finish with the freshest sound in the scene. Think Eric Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Junior Jack, Kid Crème, James Zabiela, Steve Lawler, Deep Dish, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Carl Cox, Sasha & Digweed to name a few.

Where and when was your first DJing gig?

Wow that's a long time ago at a house party back in the late 90s. I also played at a few club nights thereafter, mainly mainstream club music. It's only when I came to London, things started to really happen, it being the mecca of clubland! Nevertheless, I still play at private parties outside of clubland or underground parties under different monikers and it still rocks.

Your outfit has come a long way in such a short space of time - what do you attribute this to?

Sheer determination, hard work, networking, blood, sweat and tears. Seriously though, it's a lot of hard work and effort from the beginning and you must always believe in yourself and never give up in achieving your dreams and goals as you will get there eventually.

We are finally seeing the fruits of our labour, but we never stop working hard to achieve, and we always raise the bar each time. Last but not least, our success has to be down to a team of wicked DJs who believe in the Thirsty brand and also loyal followers and supporters. All are crucial to a successful venture.

If house rooms had not become such a staple part of the hard dance experience, would you be doing things differently? ie. putting on bigger events on your own?

Why fix it if it ain't broke! I've been to most of the hard dance events since arriving in the UK in 2000 and really enjoyed the atmosphere, vibe and crowd they've been pulling over the last few years.

We have hosted many rooms at various clubs around London, like the Ministry of Sound, Egg and Brixton Academy. I think for now though, we will be concentrating on sticking to the current formula by hosting the house rooms for other “bigger” promoters but will be running our events in the near future, so watch this space.

What has been your overall favourite Thirsty DJs event?

It's difficult to choose a favourite event as all of them have been very special in different ways. Having said that, my top five Thirsty DJs events were probably : Turnmills, Ministry of Sound, Egg, Brixton Academy and recently at the Clapham Grand. Thirsty DJs at Ibiza will definitely be the highlight for 2004, so look out for us. We are very thankful to all our fans for their support that we have come a long way from playing at a bar to excellent venues around London in such a short space of time.

Tell us about the whole Ibiza thing…..

We're working very closely with HeatUK on their Ibizan Heat tour to Ibiza this summer from 19th-26th June where clubbers can choose the “Thirsty” package for the extras being offered exclusively like having a pool at their doorstep, free breakfast all week, free DVD and CDs, half price bungee jump and loads more stuff. The co-promotion is called “Thirsty by the Pool & Beach” where a group of Thirsty DJs will be playing at various wicked bars as warm-up parties for the main events throughout the day and night.

There may be an opportunity to play at the bigger clubs/events as the finer details are being worked out at the moment. Last but not least, it is our first birthday and we are certainly celebrating it with style where all the clubbers, supporters and DJs will be guaranteed to have a fantastic time. More details will be published and revealed at the Thirsty DJs website (www.thirstydjs.com) and our newsletter.

If there was one thing you could change in clubland what would it be?

Get rid of all the politics and rivalry going on between different promoters/DJs and making sure everyone have a great time with no attitude.

Have you had a chance to play recently back home in New Zealand?

Not since the new Millennium but it's definitely in the cards when I head home someday in the not too distant future for a tour.

Are there any exciting future plans for the Thirsty DJs?

We're planning a Thirsty record label with some house production. That's in the pipeline, and also to continue to grow and promote the ever popular Thirsty DJs residents compilation series.

Please give us your all time favourite top three tunes and this summer's big three:

“My three all time favourites include ‘ Chase The Sun' by Planet Funk, ‘Big Love' by Pete Heller and ‘E-Samba' by Junior Jack.

This summer's big three will be ‘Lola's Theme' by Shapeshifters, Erick Morillo's 'Dancin' and Warren Clarke's ‘Rocking Music'.

I am really into quality house music incorporating funky, electro, progressive, tribal, tech and breaks elements. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life!

Any final words for our readership?

On behalf of the Thirsty DJs crew, we wish to thank all our supporters over the last year as we could not get here without you. We would also like to thank the promoters involved in the hard dance scene we have worked with (especially Damo at HeatUK and Will & Dickon at Frantic) and for giving us the opportunities to play at their awesome events and springboard the Thirsty DJs brand to another level. Last but not least - you only live once, so live life to the max!
