Justin time to be re Bourne!

As we count down the hours to Justin Bourne's last ever performance anywhere, a mix of emotions rise to the surface, excitement tinged with sadness, gratitude sung with regret and fondness wrapped in sorrow but let us not forget how much pleasure Justin has given many of us over the years and just what a huge sacrifice he has made driving countless miles up and down the country week in and week out. So on the eve of his retirement we present you with Justin's final ever official interview.
Hi Justin, please tell us how the last few weeks have been as you played your final sets on the farewell tour?
I've had a great few weeks. It's been really busy so a good way to finish. We've had a few adventures including an 18 hour round trip to Scotland after I missed my flight and getting stuck on the motorway on the way to a gig, we had to wait whilst a new bridge was put up by a crane that was sitting in the middle of the motorway so neither side could move anywhere. I’ve played some awesome gigs including my last ever Irish gig Revolution in Dublin, Hard Nation, Hard South, Absolute, Tidy Weekender, Insekt, E-Volve, One Chance, Concept and played some excellent new nights/venues, Resistance in Lincoln and Club Ice in Westbury both were absolutely fantastic.
How are you feeling about the impending retirement?
Mixed emotions I suppose, I'm looking forward to having my weekends free to catch up on other work and have a normal weekend instead of sleeping all day after gigs. On the other hand I know I'll probably feel a bit lost after a couple of months. It's a huge life change for me but I'll be busy with other things now.
Over 15 years ago a young JB set out, if you had to choose just one highlight what would it be?
I couldn’t choose just one. Having my tracks played on Radio 1 and Kiss FM amongst others was cool. Playing at venue’s that I used to go out to such as Turnmills, The End , Camden Palace. They remain three of my favourite clubs ever. My 8 hour back to back with Glazby at Storm last Feb was a huge gig for me and it worked perfectly, it doesn’t get much better than that. DJing all over the world and visiting places like Japan, Australia, China, New Zealand where I might of never gone during my lifetime. The list is endless, there’s been so many great things that I’ve achieved so I’m bowing out a happy man. One of the funniest things was last year when my dad rang me up when I was in Australia and said that he’d just read something on the internet about me and said “Well done son I didn’t realise what you were doing!” Oh and all my 12 year old daughters mates think I’m cool, haha!
Who were your greatest musical and none musical influences?
Easy, Pete Wardman was my biggest influence in terms of my hard house DJing. I’ve also really looked up to Steve Thomas and Tony De Vit. I’d say they were my top three for technical ability and music. Before I discovered hardbag / house / whatever you want to call it around 95 my influences were Carl Cox, Luke Slater and Krome & Ramos as they played the tracks and had the skills. Non music influence would be my Dad.
What is your own favourite JB track?
It has to be Time Is Up (Kaktai Records), one of my first tracks. Pete Wardman was supporting it amongst other big DJs at the time and it was the first track of mine that got played on the radio on Pete’s Kiss FM show. It was also the Big Beat of the Week, a great moment for me. It’s my favourite mainly for the memories more than thinking it’s my best track.
What is your favourite none JB track?
I couldn't just name one track there's so many tracks that I love, I'd have to give you a list of at least a hundred I'd imagine. Most of my favourites are from 1995-2000. Labels such as Tripoli, Sharp, Friction Burns, Tidy, Ugly Bug, Tec, XL, Wonderboy, Horseback, Pheonix Uprising, Koolworld, Duty Free, Noom, Metropolitan, Chug N Bump, TDV, Nukleuz, Crosstrax, Tinrib, Kaktai, React etc etc.
Will you still be producing tracks in the studio?
No, everything stops after April 27th. I couldn't still produce tracks if I wasn't DJing as I’d be frustrated that I couldn't play them out.
How will you fill your weekends now?
At the moment I have most of my weekends already booked out for this year decorating my house. I've already started on a new room which is currently our conservatory that we're turning into a den for a TV, P.C, Cross Trainer and a nice big leather recliner to chill out on and my current music room will be my new son's bedroom. I’m also going to get back into the gym when I have time.
What are your dreams and goals for the future?
My main priority now is to spend some quality time with the family and finish all the work in our house. I’m very busy with my day job too so having some free time will be great. We’re planning on a holiday this year which is long overdue.

What's your favourite fruit?
Mango.
Would you ever go on a nudist beach?
No. [Not even to look? – Ed.]
What's your favourite football team?
I'm not into Football at all, Boxing is my favourite sport to watch.
Have you got any pets?
My daughter has two guinea pigs in the garage called Daisy and Maisy.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
My Paul Smith leather jacket.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I honestly can't remember. I used to have a box of 7" singles that one day my friends and I frisbeed out of my bedroom window. Was Not Was, Wet Wet Wet and George Michael all got the special treatment, haha. Dance music wise possibly Bizarre Inc’s Raise Me was one of my first vinyls, I remember playing it loads.
Finally, what advice would you give to younger DJs just starting out?
Bring something new to the table, something unique, you won't stand out otherwise. Eddie Halliwell is a good example, he did something new at the time and brought so much hype and intrigue with him, fortunately he actually delivered the goods and now he’s a superstar.
You have been an inspiration to so many people both on the industry side and on the clubber side, how are you feeling about your last ever event - Twist presents Hard House History -Justin Bourne's Farewell with Friends on the 27th April 2008 at London's famous Colosseum?
I know this is going to be so special. There are lots of people that are important to me coming down for it so it’s going to be fantastic day. The Twist regulars are all amazing too, it’s like one big happy family there. The atmosphere is going to be electric; I’m bringing my camcorder to film some of it. I must admit though I’m losing sleep trying to think of a last tune, I really don’t know what I’m going to play. It’s quite a strange feeling knowing that I’ll never touch the decks again in a club, I’m packing all my equipment away into my loft the morning of Twist before I leave so when I come home Monday it’s out of sight. I haven’t played at the Coloseum for a few years either so I’m looking forward to being there again and my back to back set with Paul Batten.
It will be an emotional send of but on behalf of everyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting you we salute you and wish you love, success and happiness for the future.

I remember the first time I saw Justin play at HHA in the foyer and from that moment I was hooked! He became my No.1 DJ. When I heard the news that he was retiring I was gutted! I’ve known Justin since my early days playing for Frantic back in 1999. His enthusiasm and passion for the music and energetic sets cannot have failed to make you sit up and listen. Tunes like Drop The Dime, Kick Up The Volume, Strapped In, The Soultaker, Get Back & Catapult have all been anthems both for me and fellow hard house djs alike. So as he is now moving on to spend more time with his family, I want to wish him and family all the very best for future and thanks for all the great times! Kick Up The Volume, Play It Loud!
Andy Farley – Red Management
We are losing one of our scene's hardest working & hardest playing DJs! Justin has been someone I have looked up to all of the time I have been playing hard house, whether that be at home in my bedroom, when I was growing up or now I'm lucky enough to work in clubs. It has been a pleasure to play back to back sets with him and it will be a sad day at the end of Twist, all I can say is if you're not on the dance floor on the 27th April then you will be missing the last chapter in an amazing DJs career. I wish all the best to Justin & his family & see you all down at Twist in a few weeks!
Ben Stevens – Fireball Recordings
Justin has truly set the standard in so many ways over the past 15 years and has become both legendary and iconic as both DJ and producer. They say everything goes in and out of fashion, but Justin has managed to stay in fashion for the length of his career and if he wasn’t hanging up those headphones, he’d still be in demand in another 15 years. Just don’t hang those headphones up too high Justin!
Nik Denton – Toolbox Records
A true professional, a true innovator and someone who has made more impact on the global hard house scene than I think we will really know until he stops
Will Patterson – Frantic
Justin, I can't believe you're leaving us! You're one of the few Hard House DJs that knows how to properly rock the house! You're a huge talent leaving a massive void. The scene won't be the same without you. Hoovers and horns!
Steve Hill – Masif
Justin Bourne has been a prolific DJ and producer in the hard house scene for many years. I’m sad to hear he's not making any more fantastic tunes for me and my fellow DJs to play. He will be missed on the scene by us all
Lisa Lashes – Lashed
I have been watching and following Justin for quite a few years now – especially as a clubber! He was always one of those DJs that I just would stand and stare at while he played – watching him mix always looks so effortless and flawless. He has done wonders for this scene and is definitely a DJ that I would look up to when I started to learn to mix. It’s such a shame that he is retiring, but at least he is leaving at the top of his game
Cally Gage – Frantic
I will never forget the first time I saw Justin DJ. It was at Turnmills for Heat around 4/5 years ago? I thought 'jeez this guy is amazing!' and went so far as to embarrass myself by blurting out something ridiculous at the end of his set like 'Wow you're really good, my names Lucy Fur and I want to be a DJ too'. It sticks out in my mind so much still! In all seriousness though, I am truly gutted that hard house is losing someone so passionate about what he does, but completely understand his reasons why. It is a massive honour to be featuring on his last ever mix album, something I will always treasure. I wish him and his family a very happy future- and just hope we get to see him from time to time

Usually these announcements are of a lighter tone, telling you about the latest Red event or the next new anthem coming from the studio. This however is different. Very different.
After DJing for over 15 years, Justin Bourne feels 2008 is the time to hang up his headphones.
This decision is one based around family commitments, which until now have been balanced successfully with his busy Djing schedule. However since the recent arrival of his second child, Justin has had to seriously look at this balance and has thought long and hard about the practicalities of time required for his family, his Monday to Friday work schedule and his beloved DJing. Unfortunately there are not enough hours in the week to commit to all 3 areas.
Justin would like us to pass on that this decision was not taken lightly, and it is with a heavy heart that he is now drawing a line under what has been an amazing part of his life.
To send Justin out with a bang we've lined up a very special farewell tour which will lead up to his last ever gig at Twist in London on the morning of Sunday 27th April. Aptly titled, Justin Bourne'vs Farewell with Friends, it was his personal choice to give Twist this very special honour. A residency he has been proud of and a team he holds close to his heart.
If you're a promoter and would like to have Justin at your event for one last time, we have a few dates available so get in touch now.
We realise this is to some of you very sad news, so make sure you're there to wish Justin well at some of his last ever events. And if you're really hardcore, get yourselves to Twist, as we imagine that will be fuelled with all kinds of emotion as Justin rocks it out for the best part of 6 hours!
Over these last few months we'll be giving away exclusive mixes - past and present, as well as some other special treats to make sure you remember Bourne as the true Hard House legend he is. One that will be sincerely missed by everyone.
