Plus there's no way you will both grow in the same way, at the same rate, as you get older. So for most of your life you'll be making compromises and left stuck with a silver medal solution.
But that aside, any proposal would have to be in the form of talking about the possibility and agreeing, rather than some stupid will she/won't she spectacle.

On a serious note, no real proposal, we decided mutually after some discussion that it wasn't fair on our planned child not to be married. This was 30 years ago. The day itself was very romantic though.
