No offence, but your role in IT is not really of Value to the company. You are a cost centre, rather than a profit centre, so you are bound to be treated as such. People will try to pay you as little as they possibly can, because you are not a rainmaker. That´s just a fact.

Please explain in detailed terms how IT support / systems management isn't of value to a company.

He is fundamentally right though, the place i am now had dedicated IT support previously and now has an external support company coming in and doing it less often, if it was a money maker they'd have expanded the unit not reduced it, that is just business.

You are a cost. It is that simple. I am not trying to say that your role is not essential. However, your role is one that costs the company money, rather than makes it money. Provided you fulfill your function, then the company will try to make that function cost as little as possible.

This company has an outsourced support company and yet [after my initial interview] decided to call me when their server fucked up due a RAID issue so clearly from their own perspective there was a need for someone like me.

It was pretty evident once I'd started that their IT infrastructure had been poorly maintained for a long time, which has now been sorted out and is now properly maintained.

I've been told by many people here that I'm probably the best IT support they've ever had. There have been many complaints about our external support company who are reported to have regularly fobbed people off in relation to whether certain things can be done, or taking an age to fix basic issues if at all.

Things now hardly ever go wrong but when they do it's rare that I need to communicate with our external support.

I can understand that I don't directly bring money into the company, however IT systems are core to company operation, as is demonstrated by the fact that this place was effectively crippled during the period I was sorting their server issue.

So I might be a "drone" but in this case I'm the only one here that deals with this shit and by the admission of staff and management I've improved the stability and security of the systems and by extension have improved the ability of staff to work more efficiently.

Check out the music productions on my Soundcloud page if you dare!

I do not doubt any of the above, but still you must see my point that they will seek to obtain you for as little as possible.

Yeah I guess, I always considered such a position to be pretty important, especially as it's essential to the running of the business.

I've worked for companies that have had that attitude, and IMO it's not a very enlightened way to run a company. Controlling your costs is just as important as earning money. More so for any kind of business where your earnings are pretty much fixed.

My current company has a centralised IT mob who are fucking useless. So my department decided to spend more and get our own IT guy in. He's been spectacularly productive, we pay him well, and he's been rewarded with the recognition and authority he deserves. He's been used to really progress the business. Good IT nerds aren't an overhead, they're an asset.

Yes, but like many things when belts get tightened costs are cut regardless of any long term thinking about productivity or knock on consequences.

Kind of like tory party policy.

Well, sounds like Neonblue's mob couldn't be trusted to find their arse using both hands and a diagram, so fuckups followed by knee-jerk decisions ahoy!
