Music, dinosaurs and the joys of life with Anthony Dean

Mention the name Anthony Dean and faces will light up instantly. His catching smile and boundless energy are infectious and after being involved in London’s clubbing scene for years, he has been an inspiration to many. His love for dance music started as early as 1994 and he took his passion for the industry to the next level with the birth of Knowwhere in 2001. Working closely with business partner Pablo, they took their party to some of the best venues in London and were soon branded as the friendliest club in London.
It is now seven years later and life has certainly been an interesting journey for Anthony. After being a fulltime DJ and promoter for years, he recently took a step back to focus on his family and a career in the office. His positive nature and openness to change are also reflected in his music these days. While always chasing bouncy, energetic beats, he is no longer restricted to one genre and strives to bring out the potential of dance music as a whole.
On Friday 10th October, Anthony will share the decks at Mass with other big names to celebrate Knowwhere’s seventh birthday party. With only a few days to go before the party, we decided to delve a little deeper into the life of Anthony Dean and gather all the details of the upcoming birthday extravaganza.
You’ll soon celebrate Knowwhere’s seventh birthday. It has been an action-packed journey and with your right hand man, Pablo, you’ve taken the night to the best clubs in London. Where did it all start for you and how did you become involved in Knowwhere?
Pablo hosted a millennium New Year’s party at his flat. He turned his lounge into a proper club with scaffolding for the DJ box, lights, décor - the works. 150 people attended! After that party his wife kindly asked him to take the party elsewhere. Pablo found out about an opportunity at 414 and asked me to help him run the party. We started at 414, then moved to the Soundshaft. The party grew bigger and bigger and we moved to larger clubs to accommodate more people. The rest is history.
You have really invested in Knowwhere’s birthday extravaganza at Mass. What can people expect from the night?
First of all, a trance room as it should be and as requested by the legendary Adam White. We want people to be extremely happy and feel the energy, fun, friendly vibe and excitement of the night. We have gone the extra mile with the sound system, lights and lasers, and will also be giving away 100 copies of the brand-new Knowwhere CD.
Hosting a club night for seven years is very impressive. Highlight your favourite Knowwhere to date and tell us more about the night.
Tracey (my wife) and I had an extremely bad experience in the week before a particular Knowwhere night at the Soundshaft. I was still feeling very low on the Friday, and wasn’t in a party mood at all. At the last minute I decided to go and was greeted by every single friend and all the people I met through Knowwhere. It was one of the busiest nights ever! The party carried on and on and on. Soundshaft even stayed open later because the people didn’t want to go home. It was just such a memorable night – especially after feeling so low in the week before.
You’ve seen and lived through many changes in the industry and met many people along the way. Who is the most inspiring person that crossed your path?
It’s impossible to name just one! There are so many people who have inspired me for different reasons. Some of these stories are also quite personal, but I’ll list three:
My wife – for improving my sets and choice in tunes.
Pablo – for his strength and I know I can always count on him.
Trevor – for always giving me honest answers.
You are very well known for your energetic sets. What, for you, sets a good tune apart from the rest?
A good tune for me has to have a bouncy beat with an interesting energetic melody.
Who is your favourite producer at the moment?
Lately I’m getting more into the sounds of electro, even though I still love trance. For me it’s a natural progression and some people may have different opinions about that. But it’s just the way I’m going at the moment. My favourite producer is Thomas Gold – he plays electro with a definite trance feel to the melody.
What are the biggest tunes in your box at the moment?
In my trance box:
John O’ Callaghan – Big Sky (Agnelli & Nelson remix)
Ferry Corsten - Rock your body (Eskimo mix). This is the best balance between trance and electro I have heard to date.

If you can warm up for any DJ in the world, who would it be?
Paul van Dyk, because Tracey would like to meet him!
What is your secret to really get the crowd going?
If I tell you it won’t be a secret anymore! Just joking; I’m not sure and haven’t really thought about myself in that way. I think it just depends on the person playing the records. You can ask two people to play the same set and you’ll get different results. For me the combination, order of tunes and noticing what sounds get people going are very important. Once you’ve figured it out, you keep on producing more of that sound.
Is there anything you would like to see more of on dance floors today?
I would love to see more of the vibrant atmosphere we had in the past. People seem to be more into live bands than clubs at the moment.
Trance has been heavily influenced by techno and electro lately. In which direction do you think the genre is heading?
Back in 1994 dance music branched off to form different genres like garage and house. In the beginning trance was also influenced by other sounds and I think it is going to head in many different directions – not just techno or electro. Music tends to move in cycles and I think eventually trance will get back to being just trance again.
If you were asked to make the ultimate movie about clubbing, what would the story line be?
I hope this is not too boring! The greatest thing for me about clubbing is that you get the opportunity to interact with many different people on all levels. Nothing else in the world allows you to do that. Sometimes you meet people once and never see them again. And that’s cool. Then you also have those moments where you become really close to some people, form deep friendships and share something truly special. Every friendship is significant and if people do move apart in later years, all parties must accept it. This will be the basis of my storyline.
In the past, you’ve been involved in music on a fulltime basis and recently took a step back to spend more time with your family and on your career. Tell us more about this decision.
In the past, it was all about me making a living as a DJ and my wife supported me. I think I chased my dream so much that I lost it a little. Then my dad passed away and that made me realise what life was all about. It’s no longer just about me, but about my wife, my friends and bringing new life into this world. It’s about the unit. I have never been happier and don’t ever regret my decision. My kids have really brought back the meaning of life. I can still party and have fun, but have less to worry about and just hang out.
Ask anyone and they’ll say you are one of the most positive people on earth. Your contagious smile is ever present. How do you do it?
I’m not always positive – there are those sad times! But I generally believe happiness promotes happiness. Forcing a smile when you are down helps you to be happy again. Smiling helps energy to flow between people. It’s so contagious and will come back to you – it works!
Everyone has one tune that picks them up when they are low. What is your instant-feel-good tune?
Everyday by Agnelli & Nelson – simply because of all the good memories that come with it.
And finally, if we could send you back in time, which era would you pick?
I would definitely go back to dinosaur times. How can people predict their real colour? It’s all very consistent in stories like Jurassic Park, but how do we know? I also reckon they could talk and if we were there, we could understand them.
