A trip to the Zoo

Reported by Adam Symbiosis / Submitted 22-11-06 21:50

A visit to the zoo was in order and an invite had been issued. Come and see a mad cow, a plastic pony, an odd coloured cat and various other reprobates said the invite (or was that just my imagination). Natch. In any case it was a special night, a birthday night and I was visiting Zoology at Brixton’s Club 414.

The build up to the event had been electric, maybe so because the special guests were legendary Liverpudlians Altern-8, doyens of rave. To be honest, I had never heard them play and watched the fever pitch rise as the week progressed with interest and amusement. Walking into the club at almost 11 o’clock on the dot, I was pleased to hear Markus Buhmann dropping ‘Blue Monday’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’. I felt sorry that I hadn’t caught more of his set but my bed had a greater call in the hours leading up to the party.

Up next came Mad Phil but before there was any chance of some listening business going down, my throat needed to be watered. Missing out on the punch, which apparently had been devoured by the thirsty masses on entry to the club and finding the way to the tea barred (as always I must add) the only place to get some liquid refreshment was the bar. Scattered across it we found some small puzzles of an animalistic theme. A shark, an octopus and other beasts lined up and tempted us to solve their fiendish enigma by moving the squares around and rearranging the picture, a simple but highly amusing task. Simple pleasures for simple minds I guess.

The main room itself was covered in balloons and streamers while the zoology girls walked round with fake tattoos of the Zoology logo. In the background Mad Phil played a remix of ‘Twelve’. The floaty, chilled and progressive sound moving the set and the crowd of happy clappy people along and into ‘Rapture’ and ‘Café Del Mar’ then ‘Papua New Guinea’.

As soon as we were able to drag ourselves away, we made our way upstairs. It’s something of a duty (though that belies the enjoyment for me) to get cups of tea when I go to the 414 and this night would be no different, though there was an added benefit this time. As some of you may have seen, the flyer for this event was a giraffe, flattened down and with instructions to cut flap A, fold along line B and stick edge C, or something like that anyway. Raiding somewhere maybe we shouldn’t have produced a pair of scissors but no glue or sticky tape. Thinking on our feet resulted not in chewing gum and spit (I won’t mention what other sticky substances were suggested) but in blue tack. While not much stickier, it did the job in a more hygienic way and while our tea brewed we produced our own giraffe to show off to people. I was very impressed in this dual use flyer (three if you include making roaches for your smokes), so other promotions take note, more fun needed please. We sat down on the sofa to take it easy for a bit and catch up with some TV, well watch whatever was being displayed on the projector at the time. As the bouncer flicked he passed a programme about glamour modelling and I was soon yodelling for him to turn it back. Obviously a family establishment wouldn’t show such filth to its clientele and it was over just as quick as it had been put on.

It was nearly time for Altern-8 and the excitement was building, you could feel it ripple over the main room. But as the time came and went whispers moved quietly around. After the chaos that had been Wildchild the week before, would history repeat itself? Where were the star attraction? Had they even been booked in the first place? Was it all just a cynical marketing ploy to attract people to line the manimals pockets? Was Mad Phil going to play forever? Of course not! They had just been delayed by a few minutes and in they came to a, at first, hushed crowd. The music stopped while they set up and prepared themselves, a few minutes that felt like forever. Then it began and they showed just why they are so respected. A new track every two minutes? It seemed like that as they whizzed though the back catalogue of dance music’s history. ‘Blue Monday’ (again) then ‘Keep It Warm’, which I don’t think I’ve ever heard outside of a pub, a breaks mix of ‘Take Me Away’ then ‘Pianoman’ and ‘Good Life’. Of course there were plenty more tracks in between these few I’ve mentioned but along with the crowd they were slowly driving wild I was much too busy dancing.

The set took on a darker, more intense acid vibe around 2am with tracks like ‘Go, Charley’s Cat’ and ‘Your Love’ and I was waiting and almost expecting to hear ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’ (how wrong I was!) but soon enough they wrapped up the set. Amazingly the crowd called out for one more! In the middle of the night! They didn’t disappoint.

Latex Zebra took over the reigns and kicked off his set with ‘Yeke Yeke’. We listened for a bit but decided that in all the excitement it was time to make our way back upstairs again for another cup of tea. In the (quite literally) chilled air of the top floor we sat around and received massages and messages of news from below. The techno sounds the night had developed, BSE dropping ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, the enjoyment and merriment going on downstairs. At that present moment in time though I could have been told anything and in fact dwarfs and trays springs to mind. Maybe I shouldn’t explain.

After an age we finally got our limbs moving and made our way down to find Redcat playing a psy-trance mix of ‘Blue Monday’. I think it must have been nominated as the theme tune for the night. The hard but uplifting sounds like the Sharkboy remix of ‘At Night’ and ‘Black Dogs’ got us moving while the guy next to me looked like he was really enjoying himself. Again the tunes kept coming and coming with ‘Free Your Mind’ and ‘Sweet Dreams’ then ‘Binary Finary’ and I was thinking top stuff. He ended the night with a mash up of ‘Calling Your Name’ and ‘Don’t You Want Me’ and finally the seminal ‘I Don’t Care’.

As the track and the first 8 hours winded down (there was still the Baklash Vs Zoology after party) we were treated to a speech from Latex Zebra, surely an emotional moment for him and the rest of the team as they brought to a close their 5th birthday party. Looking back on the night despite the coldness of the upstairs room, maybe a window too many open, the night was enjoyable and full of up for it people. The music provided by the residents team moved through classics from many a genre and year and was complimented perfectly by Mad Phil’s building, brooding set and the old skool genius of Altern-8. Zoology has a full compliment of weekend zoologist (and indeed a full time one as well) that follow the party near religiously and every time I turn up I get a taste of just why they go back time and again. There’s a very strong case for just going to small parties, which includes the intimate vibe and the closer connection between DJ and clubber. If you want to enjoy that experience for yourself I don’t think you can go far wrong by starting at Zoology.

Laughs out loud Nice one Adam.
The only version of Blue Monday that usually gets played is the Hardfloor mix. I very nearly started my set with it as well. Maybe we should adopt is as the Zoology theme tune. Wink
Cheers for the review. It was a very special night.
