Alex Young & Scella

» 2012

Reviewed by Greg Zizique / Submitted 05-05-09 13:53

Label: Spin Out Records
Format: Digital
Genre: Minimal, Tech, Tribal House

Another one of those addictive exports straight out of Colombia, but in musical form from Spin Out Records is “2012” from Alex Young & Scella (Alex recently won best minimal artist 2008 on the Beatport music awards). Already receiving massive support from Groove Armada, Leger, Zabiela, Sharam Jey, Mark Brown, Funkagenda amongst many more it also boasts an Adam Shaw remix.

A pensive start leads into some heavy percussive looping on this tech house and minimal hybrid underground mover. As the track moves forward it gets brighter and bubbly with a riding bass and low slung approach with stabby effects and noises. The deep clattery break acts as a short but sweet resting point and then continues its path to the future direction.

Adam Shaw supplies the remix of 2012 and continues with the tech tip, but pumps an injection of tribal loops into it, and creating a more driving synth to give it a more headstrong outline. Sparse use of the original sounds is creatively and carefully used with a strong design of sound that gradually opens upwards and out into an effective breakdown with intense glimmer and shine. Slightly more smooth tech then minimal in comparison to the original version.
