SummerDayze 2003 @ Belvoir Amphitheatre, WA - Review

As in the UK, Summer in Australia means Festival Time! So far in Perth we’ve had Krafty Kuts and The Stanton Warriors at Breakfest, Tiesto and DJ Sneak at Sunshine People, but Sunday 11th January brought the one I was really looking forward to: SummerDayze at Belvoir. With more International acts than you can shake a dirty stick at, and taking in house, breaks, trance and hard dance, this promised to be a beauty of an event.
Belvoir is a stunning venue. The centrepiece is a large amphitheatre, holding about 3000 people and giving a fantastic view of the stage from just about wherever you are. For events like Summerdayze, the organisers also have other stages in the nearby grounds. Today there’s the Main Stage (headlined by Nick Warren), the BreaksDayze stage (headlined by Rennie Pilgrem) and the TranceDayze stage (With Ed Real headlining). Various Red Bull shade tents, food stalls, bars and a tent full of hoses (for cooling off) litter the grounds, and there’s also a Vodafone tent giving free fruit, sunscreen and massages. Nice.
After arriving just after 3pm, having a wander round and starting to acclimatise to the stinking hot day (it hit 42 degrees at one point), it was decided that a visit to see Mr. James Lawson was in order. I must admit it was a little strange to hear all his classics again but it brought back some happy (?) memories of the gurning Brixton massif’  Energise, Carte Blanche and his remix of Alphazone’s “Stay” got me bopping about and the crowd certainly seemed to be enjoying “Epidemic” at the end of his set. A very nice start to the afternoon 
While James was banging out the hard stuff, Yousef was keeping it very cool over at the main stage. I didn’t get to see much of his set, but what I did see impressed me. Nice house music for the early afternoon.
I popped my head into the breaks tent just as 10 Sui was dropping a very tidy mix of Olive’s “You’re Not Alone”. Looking very cool behind the decks, the ‘First Lady of Breaks’ was firing the crowd up nicely, but it was almost 6pm. Sanchez Time.
The last time I saw Roger Sanchez play was at Café Mambo, Ibiza in 2000. I remember it being one of the best sets I’ve ever seen, so I was keen to see if today’s performance measured up to my memories. Well, from the opening bars of Basement Jaxx’s Rendez-Vu, through the inevitable “A Little More Love”, “Let The Sunshine In” and “E Samba” and some old gems such as Sandy B’s “Make The World Go Around”, the answer was a resounding “Yes”. Like his Countryman Morillo, Sanchez really is too cool for school (I mean who else can make a white Kangol cap look so smooth?). Throughout his set, his use of accapellas and scratching really added to the vibe, and his mingling with the front of the crowd for photos and autographs at the end was proper Superstar DJ stuff
I popped out of the amphitheatre for a few minutes to get a drink and check out some of Tim Deluxe’s set on the main stage, where he was pumping out “Professional Widow”. Will this tune ever date? It still sounds fresh as a daisy to me! For a man with a DJ name “Deluxe”, I thought the big fisherman’s beard was a bit unnecessary; I mean house music is about being cool don’t you know? Just ask Sanchez So, faced with the threat of having to hear “Less Talk, More Action” *shudder*, I returned to the amphitheatre to check out the voyage of the Groove Armada.
Had it been a live set from the Groove Armada boys, I’m sure they would have set the place alight, however, I just wasn’t that impressed by Andy and Tom’s DJ set. Their tunes seemed a little flat, and even crowd pleasers like “Final Shakedown” and “Superstylin’” failed to really do the business. Their MC really could have made the difference, but he simply wasn’t loud enough and, maybe it was just me, but he seemed a little spangled. It was probably the heat.
Visiting the Breaks and Trance/Hard tents, I found the same problem – Ed and Rennie were both playing wicked sets but there was just a lack of people at each place. It’s a shame to see world class DJs playing to less than capacity, but I suppose that’s what happens when you have such a good line-up, a scorching day that kept some people away and a full car park with work the next day. Nick Warren seemed to be playing some nice proggy-trance, but even the main stage crowd was somewhat diminished from what it could have been.
All in all, I had a cracking day, and the organisation of the event (as with the other similar events I’ve been to in Perth so far) was absolutely fantastic. We walked pretty much straight in, I never had to queue much at the bar (most important  ) and got out of the car park hassle free, whilst Stu told us his story of taking two hours to get out of the Gatecrasher Summer Sound System Car Park once!
Lesson for the day though:
42 degree heat + beer + school night =
