Jody Wisternoff from the legendary Way Out West gets ready for Outside In

Gods of prog don’t come much bigger than Way Out West. The duo of Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren were amongst the original bastions of the progressive house sound with their epic, intricately woven productions that spanned the area between house and trance (and later breaks). Tracks like ‘Ajare’, ‘The Gift’ and their remix of ‘Le Voie Le Soleil’ defined an era, and around the turn of the millennium their sound became tinged with dirty growling basslines and crashing breakbeats. Nick is generally the better known dj of the two, but Jody’s dj appearances are met with similar fervor amongst dance music fans.
A fairly consistent output has seen these guys release original productions and remixes since way back in 1994, with reworks for some of massive dance tracks, such as Last Rhythm’s ‘Last Rhythm’, Faithless’ ‘Salva Mea’, Tiesto’s ‘Suburban Train’ and Joshua Ryan’s ‘Pistolwhip’. Their extensive body of work goes on and on. Their occasional live shows have been met with critical acclaim, combining their atmospheric sounds with vocals from the likes of stunning Kirsty Hawkshaw. And now, after much chasing and pestering, we’ve finally got ourselves an interview with Jody himself ahead of his set at the first in a line of club events by party people A Different World. What’s that you say Jody? A new Way Out West album?
Sorry to ask an obvious (and possibly boring for you!) question — but how and when did you guys first meet?
A long long time ago, maybe 17 years! Nick used to work in a record shop that I would visit regularly. It wasn’t until quite a few years later that we decided to collaborate, following my Father’s suggestion. I was getting tired of the rave scene and really fancied a change of vibe, and Nick was looking for a young guy with studio skills. We hit if off straight away.
‘Ajare’ was your first big original production back in 1994. Had you been producing long before that or did you have success from the off?
I had been producing for many years previously, under quite a few guises such as Tru Funk and Sublove, having been really into hip-hop as a kid and then the early house/rave scene. ‘Shoot’ and ‘Montana’ were the first 2 WOW records on independent labels, and we had done several wow remixes before the release of ‘Ajare’, which was our first major label outing.
Your music has always been described as “progressive” — what does this tag really mean to you and are you comfortable with it?
During the ‘90s that was a very accurate tag. However many things have changed over the years and the term progressive is kinda dated. I think there were too many comparisons to prog rock, which was well known for its overindulgence and lack of sexiness, if you know what I mean. It almost seems like electro house became the new prog last year. At the end of the day, it’s all acid house innit!
What would you choose as a more apt description of your music?
Electronic dance music (in a nutshell).
Do you still get a tingle when you hear tracks you did like ‘Le Voie Soleil’ and ‘The Gift’, or are you a bit sick of them by now?
A little tired of them obviously, but yeah it’s nice to pull them out when the time is right. I’m proud of the work we’ve produced over the years, and there’s nothing wrong with dropping a few oldies but goodies in a set.
Which years during your career do you look back on with particularly misty eyes? Things must have been pretty good for you around the time of ‘The Gift’ for instance…
Yeah, that was an amazing time period! Performing on Top of the Pops was a childhood dream come true, and the same day we got to meet the cast of Eastenders and Grange Hill and Peter Andre! Comedy.
You guys have been one of the few well-known names who have been producing pretty consistently for over a decade now. Am I correct in saying that you guys weren’t putting out much in 1998 and 1999? What was going on then?
Our first album came out in ‘98. We were constantly remixing, playing live, dj’ing and working on new tracks during that time period. Very very busy actually!
My apologies! You will be playing a dj set at A Different World presents Outside In at Hidden in London on September 30th, a new event from the people who used to run the Joe Bananas stall/stage at Glastonbury. Nick [Warren] is the better known dj of the pair of you so we know what he plays behind the decks — but what’s Jody’s style?
Just high calibre electronic house music really, ranging from dirty funky electro house to trippy emotional melodic tracks and quite a lot in between. I’m not as heavy on the breaks as I used to be though.
Have you had many memorable experiences at Glastonbury? Do you remember the Joe Bananas stall?
Glastonbury is the best festival in the world, and I have had countless amazing times there. My hippy parents actually took me along to the first ever Glastonbury about 25 years ago, and I think we ended up staying there for about three weeks. Yeah, of course I remember the Joe Bananas stall! How could I forget?
How often do you play out? Is it a regular occurrence or more once in a while?
Most weekends really. I’ve taken a bit of time out this summer due to unfortunate hearing damage, but I’m getting back on it now for sure.
Have you got any more plans to get your live show back on the road? How have you found the experience of performing live in the past?
Yeah we will get back on the road when we have a new WOW album to promote, which will be at some point in the near future. Absolutely loved playing live with WOW, especially travelling across America in a tourbus. Proper rock’n’roll.
Live dance music can be a tricky thing. Who else do you think does the concept well?
Underworld are amazing and have remained so for years. Orbital in their heyday. The Chemical Brothers blow me away live! Faithless, who we toured with a few years ago, had incredible control of the crowd. It was actually quite humbling.
What do you do when you want to get away from music or when your not in a club/studio environment to relax?
Spend time with my lady! (creep creep…)

Launch of a new and unique clubbing experience in central London Saturday 30th September 2006
The Glastonbury festival is one of the world’s great music events. Its legend has been built by all those people involved with its creation, along with the millions who have participated in the event over the years. In particular, more than any other event of its kind Glastonbury has gained a reputation for the often random inception and development of artistic and musical concepts. One such event, which was for years a regular fixture at Glastonbury, was the legendary Joe Bananas Sound system. A stall in the market area of the festival site Joe Bananas has done its business looking after people with the essentials in festival survival. However, once the sun went down and the stages had ended, people would come in there thousands to dance till dawn in front of the stall. With the arrival of ‘The Wall’, big business and corporate sponsorship the organizers have been forced to clamp down on un-authorized sound systems, Joe Bananas was unplugged and left silent.
Ian Leonard or Lenny to all who know him, is the man behind JB; with a lifetime of involvement in alternative outside-events, going right back to the free party years and the early days of Glastonbury. Since 2002 Lenny has been seeking to remain true to his roots by looking at ways of remaining involved with dance music and those that love it. In 2005 he launched Chameleon Bars, backstage and VIP specialists, working at events such as The Glade and Beautiful Days. From the start it was decided to make the music in the bar integral to the whole project, so to this end Chris Gaines was brought on board to organize the musical concept and content and develop the musical arm of the business. Chris has had a lifetime of involvement in the music industry, a reasonably successful producer/remixer and international Dj with his label Sumsonic records, he has also been involved in numerous other areas, from nightclub owning to artist management, international bookings and tours and numerous promotional activities. Chameleon bars are quickly gaining a reputation as the hottest marquee on site, with a selection of the highest quality artists giving it the thumbs up. Hybrid, DiY, Way Out West are just a sample of the names that have graced the Chameleon Decks, whilst festival legends Eat Static played a 2 hour live set in the bar at the recent Sunrise festival.
A Different World is the next step in the development of the music project, seen as an opportunity to bring our ideas and visions to a whole new market. All the years of experience will be channeled into making a totally original clubbing event offering a unique environment, unusual entertainment and of course, a quality upfront music policy.
To be held at the newly refurbished Hidden nightclub in Vauxhall on 30th September 2006, A Different World presents its first in a series of parties: ‘Outside In’. Going with an end of festival season theme this first event will see the venue transformed with themed décor throughout it’s three main areas. Each room will have it’s own music policy based on the musical day in the Chameleon Bar, Room 1 will represent the sounds of the ‘night’ with a selection of electro house, techno, progressive, breakbeat and a live performance, whilst Room 2, representing the evenings will play funky house and classics. In Room 3 the ‘daytime’ will be covered with a mixture of ambient music, chillout, broken beats and jazzy techno alongside alternative entertainments and cabaret acts. Acts will be drawn from amongst our friends and colleagues in the music industry, some well known and some not so well known. On top of this, for each event we will be adding an international flavor by flying someone in to entertain us from abroad.
In the run up to the event we will be running some competitions on our website, giving people the opportunity to win various prizes, free tickets and VIP passes.
