I have approved one to keep sending me stuff, Glastonbury Newsletter Smile

Has Harderfaster sent one out?

Not sure if there is any need. All hafa should have about its members is an email address which for most people by now is probably defunct. All that's happening here is chat and picture sharing.

I'm no lawyer though.

Nope, we haven't sent a specific email for the newsletter because we believe we comply with GDPR regulartions already. We can provide the date, time and IP address when a user subscribed their email address to receive the newsletter, we provide upadate and unsubscribe links with every email and we will happily remove people if they contact us.

We have been sending GDPR information out in the newsletter for a month and I think we'll continue for a bit, but so far nobody has raised any concerns.

Oh, inactive email addresses are removed automatically, I think after 3 emails are returned underliverable, so we maintain a good list at a reputable maling company without any personably identifying data.

I'm pretty sure the website complies... We checked our privacy statement and terms and conditions, our data storage, retention and processing is authorised by the user and is restricted to specific activities initiated by the user.

I went on a course for this, it was given by an auditor, that is 2 hours of my life I will never get back.

The new law is a bit of a mess, it is an EU directive that member states have to make their own legislation for.
Most of it doesn't apply to us and as our mailing list is (mostly) made up of people who asked to be on it we are pretty much covered. We are just sending out a "click unsubscribe if you want to" email.

The law is murky and the likelihood of prosecutions seem very slim.

I'm not sure this is true, just think of all the companies who have bombarded you with emails over the years, and the pleasure you'd have seeing them fined Wink

I have a special interest in this area... I own a number of domains so I control the email systems. I've set these up so I can register different email addresses on each and every site, that gives me a unique login and password combination which includes the url I see when I register. I felt this was more secure than using the same email address for every site.

An interesting side effect is that I can immediately see who has leaked my details when the sender doesn't match the site where I registered. You would be surprised and horrified at the big names who have done this over the years...

For example, HF ran ads for Holland Clubbing in 2009. Back then we used to visit friends in S Holland several times a year so I registered with HC using one of my unqiue email addresses. I haven't had any email from Holland Clubbing for years, at least 5 but probably longer. In March 2018 I started receiving emails at this address from a company called railbookers - I've never heard of them nor dealt with them. I've been waiting to see if they send any GDPR emails, nothing so far. It will be interesting to contact them tomorrow and ask where they got my details Wink

One question is whether an email database can be sold on if a company goes out of business? My guess is that wouldn't be permitted under GDPR, as the purchaser couldn't show that the recipient signed up to receive their data... Scratches Chin

I swear I don't know who most of these companies are.

Watch out using that when you switch companies, people may have opted in to receive from Company A but won't have from Company B...

Actually, that probably confirms the answer to my last question, mailing lists can't be sold.

Good.

The best comment I saw about this was that DDPR trigged the biggest spam onslaught in decades.

The part that really fucks me off is the cunts who try and make you opt out. Yesterday I tried to check the weather on uk.weather.com as they are usually extremely accurate. I opted out twice and couldn't get on the site. Gave in, opted in and lo and behold I had access. Go fuck yourself.
