2008 Burn the Band Competition starts 4 July 2008. Now in its 4th year the Burn the Band Competition is proving to be a huge success with its survivor type competition format. It has launched the musical careers of countless Durban bands and helped to polish new acts preparing them for live performance. Last year of the 30 bands that entered the compo no fewer than 9 went on to be booked for a slot at the Splashy Fen Music festival and most have enjoyed repeat shows at Burn after the competition ended. Now we search for the newest talent Durban has to offer by opening entry into this year competition. Will this year’s winner be some brand new talent or perhaps one of the bands that entered before? Whoever it is they can look forward to a R10000 cash prize and a lifetime VIP membership at Burn as well as a guaranteed slot at Splashy Fen 2009. All the finalists are paid R1000 and get 3 months on the Burn VIP list. Even if you are unlucky enough to get knocked out in the first round all is not lost. Every band that leaves the compo gets R500 and 3 months on the Burn VIP list. So you cannot loose. The theory for the competition format is as follows. To achieve in the tough industry of music performance you need a combination of strategy, crowd pulling potential, strong performing abilities and networking skills. The competition focuses on this theory and requires bands to strengthen these requirements to progress through the competition. Their progress is measured by winning immunities into subsequent rounds by winning one of three immunities: 1. Crowd Vote 2. Band Vote 3. Judge Vote It gets tougher where you can’t win the same immunity two heats in a row forcing the band to strategise, network or plan the best performance yet to get the right to play again. At the end, the way you played the game comes to the fore as the bands in the final are judged by the 24 bands that got knocked out. The Crowd Vote: On entry to the club paying customers are given a ballot they can either fill it in there and then if they are supporting mates or hold on and see the bands first before marking their ‘X’. The band with the highest number of votes wins the Crowd Immunity. If there is a draw the judges become the tie breaker. The Band Vote: After the last band plays the bands are told who they can’t vote for either because they have already won the Crowd or because they aren’t eligible for winning the Band Immunity due to the fact they won it in the past heat. One by one the bands vote and the band with the highest votes wins the Band Immunity. If there is a draw the judges become the tie breaker. The Judge Vote: Three judges are used: Member of Bhora – winners of Burn the Bands 2007 Member of Habit To – winners of Burn the Bands 2006 Member of Grindrod Muse – winners of Burn the Bands 2005 Judges get one vote each and band that gets a minimum of 2 judge votes wins the Judge Immunity. All votes are presented on stage in front of the audience making the competition nice and juicy and filled with drama all the way through. Sure it’s a competition and sure they suck if you don’t win but one things for certain every band that plays in this competition kick starts their career here. If you want the people that watch bands to know who you are where better than at KZN’s top live music venue. Additional Rules: • All losing bands in the competition become the judges in the final on 19 September. One member from each band must report to judge. Should a band fail to supply a judge the VIP status will be cancelled and will they will find it difficult to obtain further bookings at Burn. • All band members must be over the age of 18 years old. Any band member under 18 must report to me before the show and must leave directly after the performance. Should this fail to happen the band will automatically be disqualified. • Bands must adhere strictly to punctuality. Bands starting unreasonably late will be disqualified. • The winning band will receive R10000 cash and will receive a lifetime VIP membership beginning on the night after they exit. This VIP status excludes occasional high profile events. All VIP names are subject to them being over the age of 18. The club reserves the right to remove VIP status at its own discretion. • Should the clubs capacity be reached on any open night no more people will be allowed entry regardless of their connection with the performing band. Step by step guide to the night: • Only the band performing first needs to be at sound check, however bands are recommended to bring in equipment they will need for the night during this time to alleviate any delays at the door. • All bands must let me know they have arrived at the club and are ready to perform before 8:45pm. This is extremely important as the band needs to judge all the bands of the night. • When facing the stage the band playing next loads their equipment to the right of the stage and loads off to the left of the stage. • Bands begin at 9pm. With the next band starting as soon as change over has completed. • After the last band has performed all the band judges must report to the merch room where they will be given a ballot to vote for their band of the night. They will then be instructed to wait for the judge vote and audience vote. • Once these immunities have been calculated each of the band judges are given a flaming torch by the merch room and walk together to the stage for the announcements. • When on stage the audience vote is announced. The band is then handed an immunity idol putting them into the ¼ finals. That band will not be able to compete for this immunity in the next heat. • Afterwards all the bands are invited one by one to show who they voted for. This is done in public view so that everyone can see what band voted for whom. The band with the highest votes wins the Band Immunity. If there is a tie the judges will become tie breakers. • The judges will then vote for the best of the remaining bands. In the unlikely event of the judges all going 3 separate ways the band with the highest crowd wins the judge vote. • At this stage 3 bands will be holding 3 immunity idols. The remaining bands will be ‘burnt’ hence “Burn the Bands” and by burnt we mean that their flame will extinguished on stage and they will be handed over their VIP cards and payment (if applicable) and will exit the competition to reappear in the final as judges.
