Future @ Ministry of Sound - Review

Reported by Tanya Daly / Submitted 26-03-03 15:56

Once upon a time there lived a giant who reigned over the world of music. People from around the world would flock to the colossal beast's den where they would disappear inside and be part of something special for a few hours. But soon the great Goliath became greedy. "More money, more, more!" he cried out and soon those that loved him, fled in terror. The crimes that the giant started to commit became more and more heinous, like putting Kelly Lorenna and DJ Sammy on their compilations, and it was more than his devoted followers could take. And soon all that remained were the tourists who would come to gawk and feed this behemoth. And those that loved this now pathetic creature just shook their heads in dismay.

Ok, I've probably completely put you off by now, but once a month Ministry of Sound hosts one of the few super club trance nights on offer, but the question still remains: Why has this behemoth decided to sell out to the Essex handbag brigade? Now most of you won't believe this, but Future at Ministry of Sound was definitely one of the most fun nights around, with devoted punters out in full force in true clubbing style. Every third Saturday of the month could be counted on to be a great reunion of Mad Clubbers R Us.

Unfortunately, that was until they recently introduced the King of the Mozzarella, the Don of the Gorgonzola, the cheese-meister: Dave Pearce. The man that gives trance a bad name has now been let loose in Dance Mecca's great hall. While the rest of us are desperately trying to fight for the integrity of dance music to be restored, he is just pissing all over it. Gratefully, this set was not too painful, actually had some really good moments and he definitely played some awesome crowd pleasers. It was not as bad as I was expecting it to be; I thought the guy would be haemorrhaging Stilton. Whew! Now I don't believe that music is something you can be snobby about because it's a very personal thing but Eurythmics, Dave? Really? Of course there were also the female vocalist Dutch trance cringe-ers. Dave, mate, not heard of dub mixes? They're all the rage.

We took a break during his set and went to the "V.I.P" room. Well the inhabitants of this little niche took all credibility away from the status of V.I.P, but at least we had somewhere quiet to sit. Sorry, I guess sometimes I am just not very nice. I just call 'em as I see ‘em.

Now the really good bits: John Askew and John "OO" Fleming.

John Askew started off the evening with what I think is generally referred to as a kick-ass set. The man who brings you a more sophisticated trance sound, like his brilliant 'Vellum', has been a resident for some time now, and his sets are always winners. Strangely, they split his set, allowing Cheddar-chap to play his set in the middle, and then bringing Askew out again. I would say that if you're a Fridge-frequenter and your music is in the Roosta to Billy Bunter range, you would really enjoy his sets. His chunky tunes have a more progressive, underground trance sound but still have that melodious feel to them. We think that Mr A is one to watch in the future.

John "OO" Fleming has been one of my favourites since seeing him play at Gatecrasher Summer Sound System in 2001. Each time I see him, he's completely different to the last, so it's the musical equivalent of Kinder Surprise. But there's always something fun in the middle. Lately I've noticed that he is hanging around on the more progressive corner. Mr Fleming deserves his place at number 36 in DJ mag's top 100 dj's (Yeah Dave, you're only 92. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!), and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move up in the rankings during 2003.

As for the general club atmosphere, the main room where Future is held is great. It's a good size and you will find a completely different crowd in this room than you will in the rest of the club. There is only a handful of people in cyber gear and I have yet to see a group of girls swigging alcopops from a bottle, whilst dancing in a circle around their fake Prada bags. Obviously with Ministry's international reputation, there is always a mixed bag of nationalities, so this can be thought of as the United Nations of Fun! I have only met lovely people in this main room, whereas in the rest of the club, I have found many of the people to be posers and wannabe's. That's not me being snobby, I am just one of those people that doesn't give a damn what other people think of me, so I find it difficult to relate to people who go out of their way to impress strangers.

I don't know why they have decided to make Dave Pearce a regular, it was fine as it was, only having him play on Euphoria nights. I'm a firm believer in 'if it's not broke don't fix it'. It's a shame that first they dumbed down their compilations, making them a collection of 80's remixes by Flip 'n' Fill, and I worry that this will be just another nail in the coffin for clubland. It's bad enough seeing Cream go down the lavvy, and Gatecrasher cut down to once a month but do we really want Ministry to follow suit? In all the Future's I've been to in the past, the main room was so full, it was like being in a Swedish sauna, so it's not like this change is some desperate act to get the crowds back. I fear that it will be the reverse. It was the first time that I had seen the dance floor this empty by 3am. I say bring Rob J Passow back as resident who always made the opening set a blast, then have John Askew take his rightful place as main DJ before handing over to the monthly guest. Now that would be a night out! They may still have the coolest named club in clubland but for the lactose intolerant, you may have to sit a couple of hours out.

PS. My new campaign, I'm going to put the whistle banning on hold for now, and petition to get Rob Passow back. Anyone know of his whereabouts so we can send him a letter of support?

Excellent review, try the Euphoria's without Dave P, I personally found The Man Adam, Matt Darey (technically brilliant) and ESPECIALLY Anthony Dean to be very good - at the last Euphoria he was interacting with the crowd in an amazing way Smile

Ciao ciao
