We brave the extreme heat of the desert and delve into the swirling sands with the Desert Dwellers' second instalment of Breath, Re-Imagined. This is the middle child of the series; with the final instalment, the third, coming soon. This is the breadth of the Breath series of albums, which is actually a continuation of their Downtempo Dub franchise.
As with the previous album, the 10 tracks of the original have been transformed into lengthy variants with remixes coming from Forever & Ever, Derun, Roderic and more. Strangely, "Praise Her, The Fire Keeper" isn't on this edition, having been featured twice on Breath Re-Imagined Vol.1. I would have liked to have a trance mix of it. Oh, well, maybe on Re-Imagined 3!
As for the tracks themselves, the one that stands out is the Derun remix of Dreams Within A Dream, which is made into a 10-minute sprawling epic; echoing the epic nature of the original. Rapossa takes on To Be The Air and fashions a proggy remix that is strangely calming. Looking down the tracklisting and hearing all these stellar reworks, you get a sense that the Dwellers know some pretty interesting musicians who will provide exotic mixes of their work. Take the Suduaya mix of Wandering Sadhu from Nomadic Ecstatic Vol.2, for example. [I recommend both volumes of that EP; if only for the Banco de Gaia mix of Shiva Nataraj].
Getting back to this album though, this is well worth a few listens for the sheer length and breadth of what the producers offer on their re-rubs of Breath. With Volume 3 around the corner, we will venture into the desert once more very soon!
