Review of Wildchild’s 4th Birthday @ SeOne Reported by VinDiesel / Submitted 02-11-06 16:34 One of the things about Wildchild parties is the big following of loyal fans who travel from around the country and of course London to support the promotion. Evidence of this support was in abundance on Saturday night at SeOne for Wildchild’s 4th Birthday. I was on a lads’ night out with my close friend Russ, who I met whilst out clubbing 5 years ago. We’ve enjoyed many a good, fun night out clubbing and it had been a while since we last went out together. We'd decided to do a big night out, one that would cater for our various tastes in music from house to breaks to trance to hard dance, so we selected Wildchild to be just that. Usually we go to hard house nights but we fancied something different this time round and settled on this before there was any mention of guest djs Marco V and Mark EG. You could see the long line of eager, happy, buzzing, Wildchild clubbers in the queue. One of the things I’ve always liked about Wildchild is the friendly crowd who turn out regularly to support it. Fortunately the queues weren’t as long to get in as we thought, the coat checks even faster. After a nice passage in, we set about our usual orientation of the rooms of SeOne to see what room was what. Whilst in some of the rooms there were banners marking where we were, we couldn’t find set list times anywhere. At Frantic Vs Wildchild the year before, I seem to remember seeing set times by the entrance to rooms or on walls next to the speakers. After checking out each of the rooms we eventually found ourselves heading straight through a busy, buzzing Storm arena, into Deep Blue to see K.A.R.L. in a fantastic back to back set with Ben Gold. It was great to see quite a few familiar faces in there as well. Although at that early point of the night, I could feel the heat in Deep Blue rising… I had already started to sweat, and I hadn’t even started stomping yet! We went back into the hard dance arena for another cracker of a set from Technikal, playing lots of his quality production material. It was just great to hear such a powerful sound system banging out his finest tunes! The sounds in the main rooms and the front trance room especially, were crisp, loud and powerful without deafening our ears. We passed through the breaks/house room and it was a shame that I didn’t spend more time in there, because the room was buzzing all night with some great beats. It did provide a sort of escape and breather from The Storm room though, especially during Phil Reynolds set. We only got to see Phil’s set because he walked in to play just as we were heading off elsewhere. Again with no set times, we had no indication of when he was actually due to come on. Nevertheless, it is always great to hear Phil in any club and he banged out another quality set, jam packed with top tunes. I was stompin’ away through these while Phil managed to overcome the distraction of someone twiddling the knobs on his mixer. It would be extremely annoying at the best of times if trying to play, but definitely unthinkable whilst someone like Phil is in command of the decks! Phil took note and eased the controls back, but they were then twiddled again! Phil went back and adjusted things and the said individual left the stage, by gentle persuasion or force I don’t know! Phil took it all in his stride and with complete professionalism and calmness set things back, along with a cheeky grin to the crowd. Normally I could stomp the whole way through a Phil Reynolds set, but it was just too hot in there and I was gasping for a bit of air. I’ve found this a problem with Deep Blue and perhaps more attention needs to be given to the air conditioning and ventilation in there, before another serious incident occurs. The heat was also unbearable in the hard dance arena. We found the main trance room not too bad. The last time I was in SeOne it was very busy, but I was able to move around quite freely and enjoy the night. Due to immense popularity of Wildchild, I should have known nothing other than to expect it to be very busy in the main rooms, along with the heat problems and difficulty moving around. With not knowing what or who was coming up in any of the rooms, we spent the night wandering from room to room, as were a lot of other people. We went into the Trance Generation room at the front, which for me provided some great music throughout the night, as well as being a comfortable space to move around with easy seating. There were certain sets at around 1am, 4am and the last set which I particularly enjoyed. I believe we saw Ehren Stowers and U4IC DJ’s, but again I can’t confirm this. This adds to the shame of there being no set lists, as the djs who played great sets couldn’t be identified by the clubbers. An advantage of set times is also making sure that you are in the right place for key parts of the night. We were told later that the set times were available on a printed lanyards. Having spent £23 on my ticket, I refused to pay an extra £4 to find out the set times. After all, I have been to promotions where I’ve spent half the amount of my Wildchild ticket price to get in and still had set times printed on clubbing forums and in the club itself! My friend Russ is a big fan of Lab4, so one of the reasons he was looking forward to going to Wildchild was that it would be his last chance to see Lab4 before they quit at the end of the year. We had earlier seen that a special stage had been constructed for their set in the hard dance arena but we had no idea when they were due to play. As it turned out we entered the room just as ‘Candyman’ was playing. Then Lab4 finished. I was gutted for Russ that he had missed this set, as this was the first time that he’d been out clubbing this year. Aside from Lab4, luckily there were some other djs including Mark EG, Ian M and Paul Glazby that he was hoping to see. But, as it turned out Mark EG did not play, we have since heard that it was due to Mark having a bad back — get well soon! We couldn’t confirm whether Ian or Paul played at the event or not! We could see from looking at some lanyards that other people had paid for that Marco V was not even on the listings to play. These lanyards must have been printed well in advance, so the promoters knew he wasn’t going to be playing! Despite this there was no mention prior to the event on any clubbing websites or even the official Wildchild website that Marco V was not playing, athough rumour had it before the event that he was already booked for a set in Poland on the same night. We looked along the walls of the rooms, looked around the entrance to SE1 for any ‘special announcements’, print-outs of set times or indeed line-up changes. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find anything to inform us as to what was going on. I do remember seeing Rob Tissera, Proteus and the Nu Energy Collective play great sets in the hard dance arena and Kevin Energy b2b Sharkey in the hardcore room. I can’t comment on any of the djs in the trance arena leading up from the toilets next to the hardcore room, as I didn’t know who was playing! We spent most of the night wondering when Lucy Fur was going to play. Lucy arrived at 5.30 am and she told us that she was due to play around 6am, so we decided to hang on until then to see her play. We then found that some rooms were being closed from about 5.30 am. We went into the Trance Generation room which had closed just before 6am. We went into the main trance arena, where we tried to go into the hardcore room, but that was also shut. It was now just before 6am. We then went into the hard dance arena next to the hardcore room where the Nu Energy Collective were playing. We wandered up to Deep Blue but the door to Deep Blue was shut… another 3 rooms closed early! So we had no option but to stay in the hard dance arena for the Nu Energy Collective’s set. Fortunately it was great to hear and listen to as we still had some energy to dance. However at 6.15 am this set finished and so Wildchild came to a premature end, much earlier than stated. Err hang on!! Wasn’t this event supposed to finish at 7am? And that was supposed to be after the clocks had gone back an hour! Unfortunately we didn’t get to see Lucy Fur back to back with Hypervixen, as their set had been cancelled to help clear the rooms for an afterparty that never materialised. My friend and I had fun catching up, chatting, dancing and listening to some great music, but we left SE1 baffled as to how a big event like Wildchild could end on a whimper of a note. We had aimed to stay right until the end of the event but were moved (or rather herded like sheep) as each room closed. With a lack of set times we could only verify a handful of djs we actually saw play at Wildchild. What was interesting to note was that one DJ actually said to me later that morning that he had played three sets at Wildchild. Was it with the same set of records I joked. They said it was with 3 different sets of records in 3 rooms. It’s quite hard to say how good or bad our night was at Wildchild. The two of us had a good night out at an event with a friendly crowd in a club with great lasers and sound systems. But we felt frustrated at missing out on djs we hoped to see and hearing great music played by djs we didn't know the name of. And all this for the price of £23! There are some vital issues with the management and organisation of this event that need to be addressed quickly by the promoters. Serious assurances also need to be made for future events if they are to maintain their loyal following in years to come. Firstly that the problems were little to do with the djs - some great music was played on the night and secondly the general feeling that a lot of people had on the night of complete disorientation due to having no set times. BTW, the TG room had Ehren Stowers 12-1, Scott Bond 1-2 (I think), U4ic DJS 2-4 (cos Ronski Speed turned up late) - he was on 4-5, Paul Kershaw 5-6 and MArk Vedo 6-7. To be fair the TG room did stay open until about 6.45 (old time) but it was the last room to shut. Shame most people on the forum have portraid wildchild in a bad light, but everyone knows what its like at seone in general. Well done to vindiesel for doing this review. Alot of people are putting alot of the blame on reece ellitott but i dont think reece is all to blame, i am sure he is doing his best. I have been to plenty of wildchild events and never had any problems, it should be about loving the music, not worrying about anything else. I had(unlike u) purchased a lanyard with set-times, but unfortunately didn't find it to be of any use, as very few of the set times seemed to be correct!! Still had a good night, but was disappointed at the dis-organised nature of the event(esp after travelling so far), to say the least! From: dvs on 16th Nov 2006 19:24.29 Add your comments here !i went 2wildchild wit my 2mates, and as always we went only for the hardcore areana, and like a lot of nights we didnt know who was playing when, but to be honest it didnt matter cause the music did the talking and we left feeling that it was another fat nite under our belts, and i agree there was no ventilation, the hardcore room was half empty alllllll nite cause it was soooooooooo hot in there, i left at 6am soaking wet head to toe, it was like solistice04 all over again, i was there too. otherwise another fat hardcore nite which left us begging for more...........
